Paris Airport Runways Temporarily Closed as Drones Search for Lost Dog

A troubling incident unfolded at Paris’ Charles-de-Gaulle Airport recently when a dog, Amalka, escaped from her crate during unloading after a turbulent flight from Vienna. This unfortunate event occurred as Amalka and her owner, Croatian tourist Míša, were traveling on an Air France flight en route to Dallas. Reports suggest that the crate door likely came loose due to turbulence during the flight, leading to Amalka’s escape upon landing. The dog, weighing 15 kg, had to travel in the hold since Air France only allows pets under 8 kg to stay in the cabin. The airport was soon engulfed in a search operation, as Míša launched an appeal on social media and dedicated her time to finding her beloved pet.

Upon discovering that Amalka was missing, the airport management swiftly took action by closing down two of its four runways to facilitate the search. This decision marked a significant disruption as Charles-de-Gaulle is one of Europe’s busiest airports, handling an impressive 67 million passengers in 2023 alone. The measures taken included using drones to locate Amalka, which had been roaming around the large airport area of nearly 33 square kilometers. Despite numerous sightings and attempts, airport officials reported that capturing Amalka proved difficult. Míša’s distress over the situation was palpable as she expressed how her dog, trained to be her emotional support, plays an integral role in her well-being—especially in challenging situations like this.

Air France assured Míša of its commitment to supporting her during this distressing time. The airline understood the emotional turmoil felt by the owner and confirmed that it would be providing accommodations for Míša while she assisted with the ongoing search efforts. The company emphasized their shared concern for Amalka’s safety. As Míša remained close to the airport, Air France and various volunteers from different sectors predominantly focused on re-establishing the connection between the dog and her owner.

Amalka’s story brought to light the challenges faced when transporting pets, especially in airline cargo holds. The incident drew comparisons to another recent occurrence involving a TAP Air Portugal flight, where a crate mishap resulted in the escape of 130 hamsters. This surprising incident raised alarms about potential hazards, including the risk of small animals damaging aircraft systems while roaming freely. Such events prompt a broader discussion on the protocols airlines have in place for transporting animals and how they can prevent similar mishaps from happening in the future.

In addition to highlighting the emotional aspects of pet ownership and support animals, Míša’s public appeal reflected the power of social media in rallying community support for a common cause. Many individuals and organizations have joined the search for Amalka, showcasing communal compassion for a pet in distress. This incident has also intensified conversations around the need for more stringent safety measures and regulations concerning the transport of pets by air, ensuring their well-being and that of their owners.

As the search continues, the hope remains that Amalka will be found safe and sound, allowing her and Míša to reunite. The situation underlines the profound bond between animals and their owners, especially service animals trained to provide support. As Charles-de-Gaulle Airport works to recover Amalka, the case serves as both a cautionary tale and a touching reminder of the lengths to which people will go to seek help and find their loved ones.
