The athlete had previous assault convictions from the UK before being arrested in Spain
Briton Steven Kinnersley, a 43-year-old former professional boxer, was arrested in a Puerto Alcudia hotel in Mallorca on Monday night, June 20, for reportedly beating his girlfriend.
The Guardia Civil and Alcudia Police arrived at the hotel shortly after 11pm following several calls from worried guests who had heard a commotion coming from their room. It transpired that Mr Kinnersley has overheard a phone conversation between his girlfriend and a friend, and became jealous.
A violent argument ensued, during which the ex-boxer repeatedly hit his 34-year-old partner.
According to official sources, Mr Kinnersley was extremely agitated and aggressive when the authorities arrived at the hotel, but one of the officers who spoke fluent English managed to calm him down.
The alleged attacker has previously been convicted of several violent offences in the UK and has served three prison sentences.
In one case, Mr Kinnersley beat up a pub owner following a day of drinking and in another, he was convicted of being part of a gang that attacked two men leaving a pub in Letchworth.
One of the victims was glassed in the face and the other required extensive surgery after both his legs were broken. He also has a previous charge for domestic violence.
A judge at the time described the former boxer as a “danger to the public”.
