Both hospital and ICU admissions in Spain have also risen in the last week

After declining steadily for several weeks, the cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 years has suffered a slight rebound on Tuesday June 14, increasing by 11 points to 589 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In addition, the Ministry of Health reports that the average incidence over a seven day period has also jumped from 278 cases to 284; however, this figure is still more than 50% lower than the 14-day incidence, indicating that cases should drop again in the coming days.

The Ministry now only reports data on the older populations and since this new monitoring strategy was introduced, the peak in the incidence rate was recorded on May 20, when it stood at 848 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Hospital admissions have also seen a slight increase, with 6,763 patients currently admitted across Spain, meaning that 5.5% of all hospital beds are occupied by individuals with coronavirus. Similarly, ICU occupancy has risen slightly since Friday, from 3.65% to 3.85%, with 342 critical patients.

By region, the North African enclave of Ceuta (11%) and Madrid (8.6%) continue to have the highest occupancy rate of Covid patients, followed by Castilla-La Mancha (8.1%), Castilla y Leon (6.9%), the Basque Country (6.3%) and Catalonia (6.5%).

In the last week, a further 157 Covid-related fatalities have been registered, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the pandemic to 107,239.

Since the last update, 36,133 new coronavirus cases have been reported, 18,574 of which were diagnosed in people over the age of 60. While this is a decrease on the figure registered on the same day last week, it has unfortunately not been reflected in the incidence rate.

In addition, the positivity rate of people being tested for Covid is now approaching 30%, far higher than the 5% the WHO recommends for the spread of the virus to be considered “controlled.”

Since the last update, 39,087,670 people, representing 92.7% of the population over the age of 12, have been fully vaccinated against Covid. In addition, 39,235,362 people (93%) have had at least one dose.
