Desperate Drake Claims Universal Misrepresented Popularity of Kendrick Lamar’s Track ‘Not Like Us’

The longstanding feud between Canadian rapper Drake and acclaimed artist Kendrick Lamar has resurfaced with newfound intensity, as Drake has accused Universal Music Group (UMG) of conspiring with Spotify to exaggerate the popularity of Lamar’s recently released diss track, “Not Like Us.” This latest development comes as a shock to many fans, who thought the animosity between the two had reached a stalemate. Historically, the rivalry between them has been likened to an uneven matchup, where Kendrick emerged as the clear victor. Despite this, Drake appears to be grappling with his defeat and is now resorting to legal avenues in an attempt to challenge the legitimacy of Lamar’s recent success.

In a legal petition filed in New York, Drake’s company, Frozen Moments LLC, has called for the preservation of records that could serve as evidence in a potential lawsuit against UMG. The claim accuses the media conglomerate of launching a deliberate campaign to manipulate streaming services to amplify Lamar’s diss track, “Not Like Us.” The allegations suggest that UMG used tactics, including bots and pay-for-play schemes, to artificially make the song viral. This petition notably highlights the relationship between UMG and Spotify, positing that preferential licensing arrangements may have been made to favor Lamar’s track over Drake’s contributions. As tensions escalate, Drake’s allegations reflect a desperate grasp for relevance in the eyes of the public.

In response to Drake’s claims, UMG has publicly denied the accusations, asserting their commitment to ethical practices in marketing and promotional campaigns. They called the suggestion that they would undermine their own artists “offensive and untrue.” The statement aims to discredit Drake’s legal maneuvering by reiterating that listeners have the ultimate choice in music consumption, and no amount of legal antagonism could alter that reality. With this rebuttal, UMG aims to position itself as an advocate for the artistry of both Drake and Kendrick, distancing itself from any potential conspiratorial practices suggested by Drake’s legal team.

This legal move from Drake represents a significant escalation in their rivalry, signaling his inability to accept the dynamics of their competition. Kendrick’s recent achievements, including several chart-topping hits and a headline slot at the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show, further establish him as a dominant figure in contemporary hip-hop. The release of his surprise album “GNX” has only added to his stature, culminating in numerous accolades, including five nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards—honors that have conspicuously excluded Drake. This stark contrast in recognition illustrates the shifting tides of their careers, with Lamar reaping the benefits of public and critical acclaim.

The provocative lyrics in Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” which accuse Drake of inappropriate behaviors and reinforce Kendrick’s cutting critique of his rival, have contributed to its overwhelming streams and nominations. With over 900 million plays on Spotify, the track has cemented Kendrick’s lyrical prowess and cultural significance, while Drake’s absence from the Grammy nominations raises questions about his current position in the music landscape. Given hip-hop’s competitive nature, these awards and accomplishments often serve not only as professional validation but also as markers of respect and dominance within the genre.

Adding to the ongoing melodrama, Drake has scheduled his first Australian tour in eight years to coincide with Kendrick’s performance at the Super Bowl. This apparent alignment seems strategic, drawing attention to the contrasts in their careers while further fueling speculation about the personal animosities that lie beneath their musical rivalry. The unfolding drama between these two industry titans exemplifies the intersection of creativity, competition, and personal rivalry that characterizes the world of hip-hop, generating considerable discussion and engagement among fans and critics alike. Whether Drake’s legal moves will evolve into a full-fledged lawsuit or if this chapter will further tarnish his reputation remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the feud is far from over.
