The Syrian Heritage Week: A Collaborative Effort to Safeguard Syria’s Cultural Treasures

The Syrian Heritage Week, a significant international event held in Rome from January 20th to 25th, brought together leading experts and academics to address the critical issue of preserving Syria’s rich cultural heritage in the anticipated post-Assad era. Organized by the Heritage International Institute, this initiative marks a pivotal step towards establishing a global taskforce dedicated to protecting Syria’s invaluable historical sites and artifacts from further damage and destruction. The event served as a platform for in-depth discussions, strategic planning, and collaboration among international organizations, academic institutions, and experts in the field of cultural heritage preservation.

The primary objective of the Syrian Heritage Week was to lay the groundwork for the formation of a specialized international taskforce that will be deployed to Syria in the near future. This taskforce, composed of leading experts in cultural heritage preservation, aims to assess the damage inflicted on Syria’s cultural sites during the years of conflict, develop comprehensive conservation strategies, and implement effective measures to protect and restore these treasures for future generations. The Heritage International Institute, a prominent organization based in Rome, has taken a leading role in spearheading this initiative and mobilizing international support.

The week-long event witnessed the active participation of over 30 universities and numerous international organizations, fostering a spirit of collaboration and knowledge-sharing. The discussions focused on a range of crucial topics, including the development of effective strategies for cultural heritage preservation, the role of international cooperation in safeguarding Syria’s cultural assets, and the mobilization of necessary resources to support the taskforce’s mission. Experts shared their expertise, insights, and best practices, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in protecting Syrian heritage.

Multilateral cooperation emerged as a central theme during the Syrian Heritage Week, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts among various stakeholders. Professor Carletti from Roma Tre University highlighted the significance of cultural heritage as a key asset in development cooperation, particularly in conflict-affected contexts like Syria. The creation of the taskforce is envisioned as a collaborative endeavor, bringing together expertise and resources from different countries and organizations to achieve a common goal.

The Heritage International Institute has taken proactive steps to secure funding for the taskforce’s operations. Leveraging its network of partnerships with foundations and organizations, the institute aims to mobilize financial resources to support the taskforce’s activities on the ground in Syria. The institute’s CEO, Sergio Iovino, expressed confidence in the expertise assembled and emphasized the commitment to translating the discussions and plans into concrete actions.

The composition of the taskforce is carefully considered to reflect the principles of development cooperation, ensuring inclusivity and representation from various stakeholders. Italy’s unique position, as the only Western country with an operational embassy in Syria, provides a distinct advantage in facilitating cooperation and engagement within the country. Hani El Debuch, Director of the Syria taskforce, underscored the importance of leveraging existing diplomatic channels and partnerships to effectively implement the taskforce’s mandate.

The Syrian Heritage Week marks a significant milestone in the international effort to safeguard Syria’s cultural heritage. The creation of the international taskforce represents a tangible step towards ensuring the protection and preservation of these invaluable treasures for future generations. Through collaboration, expertise, and strategic planning, this initiative aims to restore and revitalize Syria’s cultural landscape, contributing to the country’s recovery and future development. The taskforce will play a crucial role in assessing damage, developing conservation strategies, and implementing protective measures to ensure the long-term preservation of Syria’s rich cultural heritage. As Syria transitions into a post-conflict era, the protection of its cultural heritage will be essential in rebuilding communities, fostering national identity, and promoting reconciliation.
