Pizza, a culinary creation with roots tracing back over two millennia to the Roman world, has evolved from a simple flatbread to a globally beloved dish, achieving the prestigious recognition of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017. Celebrated annually on January 17th, World Pizza Day commemorates this rich history and the enduring appeal of a food that transcends cultural boundaries. From its humble beginnings to its current status as one of the most consumed dishes worldwide, pizza’s journey is a testament to its adaptability and enduring deliciousness. The date itself holds significance, coinciding with the feast of St. Anthony Abbot, the patron saint of fire and related professions, including the essential pizza-making craft.

The economic impact of pizza, particularly in its birthplace of Italy, is substantial. The industry provides 100,000 jobs, doubling to 200,000 on weekends, a reflection of the constant demand for this culinary staple. With a projected global turnover of €160 billion in 2024, of which €15 billion originates in Italy, the pizza industry is a significant economic driver. Italy alone produces a staggering 2.7 billion pizzas annually, translating to approximately 46 pizzas per person, encompassing all age demographics. This figure underscores the deeply ingrained role of pizza within Italian culture.

While Italians cherish pizza as a national treasure, their consumption habits differ from global trends. Italians prioritize quality ingredients, opting to pay a premium for superior products. Interestingly, despite pizza’s Italian heritage, the United States leads in per capita consumption, with Americans devouring an average of 13 kilograms of pizza per year. Within Europe, Italy holds the top spot with 7.8 kilograms per person annually, followed by Spain (4.3 kg), France and Germany (4.2 kg each), and the United Kingdom (4 kg). This data highlights the global reach and diverse consumption patterns of pizza.

The rise of food delivery services has further propelled the pizza industry’s growth. Some delivery apps report an order placed every two seconds, with year-on-year turnover growth projected at 20% between 2024 and 2025. This surge in online ordering reflects changing consumer habits and the increasing convenience of accessing this beloved food. The ease of ordering through digital platforms has undoubtedly contributed to pizza’s continued popularity and market expansion.

The global pizza landscape is diverse, with a wide range of variations catering to different tastes. According to TasteAtlas, the classic Margherita reigns supreme as the most popular pizza worldwide, followed by the Montanara and Calzones. American-style pizza, laden with cheese, vegetables, and tomato sauce, secures the sixth spot, followed by pepperoni pizza (using the American definition of pepperoni as a type of salami) and the iconic New York-style pizza. At the bottom of the popularity list lies the Italian Mimosa pizza, topped with corn and cooked ham. Preceding it are the Cuban pizza, Scottish fried pizza, Quad City-style pizza (a grilled variant popular in the US), and Canada’s unique pizza-ghetti, featuring spaghetti as a topping. This ranking reveals the international interpretations and regional variations that have emerged from the basic pizza concept.

Despite its enduring popularity, the cost of pizza has been subject to inflationary pressures and the increasing demand for higher quality ingredients. A survey conducted by Altroconsumo reveals varying price points across Italian cities. Sassari emerges as the most expensive, with an average cost of €14.67 for a pizza, soft drink, and service, followed by Bolzano, Milan, and Venice. More affordable options can be found in Livorno (€8.67), Pescara (€9.18), Naples (€9.63), and Bari (€9.63). These price variations reflect regional economic differences and the varying cost of ingredients and services. Regardless of the price or preferred toppings, even the controversial pineapple, pizza’s global appeal continues to resonate, making World Pizza Day a celebration enjoyed by countless individuals worldwide.
