The adverse weather conditions resulted in countless people being trapped in their homes and cars throughout Spain
Following a calm period of relatively settled weather throughout Spain in the latter part of August, a violent DANA weather front unleashed storms and strong gusts of hail and wind on much of the country on Wednesday September 1. The isolated high-altitude depression caused chaos and resulted in flooding, washed away cars and blocked streets and roads.

In Madrid, several Metro lines collapsed and the rain caused large reservoirs of water in the streets, which led to the closure of tunnels to prevent cars from blocking traffic. In addition, a lightning strike caused a pile of branches and tree cuttings to catch fire, resulting in a 10-metre high blaze.

In the Toledo town of Burguillos, hail stones the size of golf balls reportedly fell, while the Amazon ship in Illescas lost part of its roof due to furious gusts of wind. The Alcanar meteorological station in Tarragona recorded 232 litres of water per square metre in just three hours, while the torrential rain damaged the electricity supply, leaving 5,000 residents without power.
