Belgian authorities requet lifting of MEP immunity to investigate Huawei bribery allegations

Belgian authorities have formally requested the European Parliament to revoke the immunity of five Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) involved in an investigation into allegations of corruption by the Chinese technology company Huawei. This is in response to a query raised by the Belgian Prosecutor’s Office, which believes the investigation concerns individuals linked to Huawei.

The five MEPs involved are three members of the European People’s Party (EPP), one representing theSocialists & Democrats (S&D), and one from Renew Europe. The inquiry came to a full stop two months ago, with searches conducted in the offices of the European Parliament.

The Belgian prosecutor’s office has charged eight individuals, alleging allegations of money laundering, involvement in organizing a criminal enterprise, and active corruption. These charges stem from potential conflicts of interest between the suspected participants and Huewidth.

The EPP and various EU officials have assured that the full list of implicated MEPs has not yet been released, and a minor number of parliamentarians have confirmed their immunity has already been revoked. However, there is no widespread indication that all concerned have confirmed their immunity loss.

The EU has initially dismissed the allegations and related calls, but EU officials have acknowledged the complexity of the case and expressed uncertainty regarding the allegations. Meanwhile, some SLaura and others claim there is no evidence of their involvement in the matter and deny any exposure to the media, despite their support for Huewidth.

“Because of the complex investigation and the nature of the allegations, the Chamber of représentation has announced that it will advance the inquiry,” said Jean-Paul Bocquet, the PLATEAU of the European Parliament. “This is evolving with the undoubtedly growing attention to the case.”

Belgium has responded by formally requesting the immunity of specified EU MPs to ensure the case is properly addressed. The EPP and the S&D showed that some members had already expressed-confidence in their immunity being lifted, sparking questioning from both Brussels and Brussels.
