Doubtful waste management: is Cyprus doing enough to fight illegal landfills?

The European Union’s waste management policies aim to minimize environmental harm and human health risks. A global waste generation rate of 2.2 billion tons annually highlights the urgent need for effective solutions. The EU’s stance on waste disposal is clear: prevention and reuse are prioritized, with recycling established where possible. Landfill disposal remains the most dangerous option, with regulations strictly limiting waste to under 10% of municipal waste. The 1999 Directive provides ecological guidelines but has seen its implementation lag due to legal and enforcement challenges.

In 2023, the European Commission references Cyprus for recent progress, such as the “Pay-as-you-Throw” initiative introduced by the inner analytics district, allowing waste fees to be adjusted based on mixed waste volume. The €250 million EU Investment Strategy aims to accelerate this phase, setting a clear direction for future action.

The European Commission ongoing pressure on Cyprus indicates a collective need for effective waste management solutions. The 2024 EU-greenanga initiative examines the necessity of achieving these goals under EU directives.
