Exclusive: Commission has change of heart on anti-discrimination directive

The European Commission returned to its proposal for an Equal Treatment Directive after prioritizing it over the earlier won’ts, a move that drew mixed reactions from lawmakers and civil society. The directive, which aims to expand “anti-discrimination protections” to categories such as religion, disability, age, and sexual orientation, had been a major puzzle in the EU. The EU Parliament, after separating from its broader work programme in February, had expressed willingness to consider the directive, signaling that it may have gained more traction.
