Only 18% of foreigners who visited Spain in July bought a package tour from a travel agency
A mere 18.3% of foreign travellers who visited Spain in July 2021 had a package tour through a tour operator or travel agency. This is in contrast to figures that remained steady over the last decade or so, when around 30% of holidaymakers who came to Spain from overseas booked their vacation through a travel agency or operator.

The news comes on the same day that overall foreign travel for summer 2021 is up on last year, but the trend towards tourists booking holidays by themselves is making tour operators and those in the travel sector in Spain think twice about how they target foreign visitors, and has left many wondering how the Covid pandemic will change the tourism sector and whether these changes will be permanent.
The sector was hit badly after Thomas Cook went under in September 2019, and the pandemic has only exacerbated this. In terms of the number of seats on airplanes to Spain in the last two years, tour operators from such countries as the UK and Germany have lost a lot of business this summer compared to 2019.
