In France, coming out of the closet and living openly as a member of the LGBTI+ community can be a significant psychological, emotional and social challenge. Until just 40 years ago, it was also a legal one. In 1982, the age of consent was lowered from 21 to 18 for homosexuals in France, making it the same for everyone. This landmark law paved the way for important civil liberties, including the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2013. But there are still obstacles to be overcome. To find out more about the ongoing fight for equality, we speak to Sébastien Tüller, LGBTI+ legal advisor for Amnesty International France.
One man’s story spans some of the key moments in the history of the LGBTI+ struggle. Bernard Bousset grew up in an era when homophobia was a constant menace. French laws at the time meant that he was even arrested and brought before a judge. Our reporters went to meet him.
Meanwhile, the internet can provide a platform for those seeking solidarity, help and support. Activists, groups and associations use social media for outreach, but individuals can also have a strong impact. One high school teacher in the central French city of Clermont-Ferrand came out on TikTok in June 2021. Timothée Curado uses the app to fight homophobia online and in the classroom. The teacher now has almost a million followers. Our team went to meet him and some of his students.
