The study found that more than 24,000 women in Sweden had endometriosis from 1974 to 2001, and that women who had difficult or traumatic childhoods were 20% at risk. The study highlighted that adverse experiences, such as having a parent with mental or substance abuse, a teenage parent, or witnessing violence or sexual abuse, were key factors in higher risk. Women with five or more such adverse experiences had a 60% increased probability of developing endometriosis, compared to those with trauma-free childhoods. The researchers also found that early life experiences can have a more significant impact on later health outcomes, as early stages advocate for early prevention and treatment in healthcare systems. Small changes in early life can have long-lasting effects on overall health, and it is ignored how much these experiences influence women’s well-being during adulthood.
