The 80-year-old grandfather shot himself in the head on the island of Formentera
An elderly man shot and wounded his 22-year-old grandson and his 45-year-old daughter-in-law before taking his own life in the Venda des Pi de Català area of Formentera on Thursday morning, January 20.
According to the Guardia Civil, an altercation occurred between the 80-year-old man, originally from Germany but who had been living in the Balearic Islands for many years, and his daughter-in-law as the woman prepared to take her children to school. The deceased’s grandson came into the front yard to intervene, and his grandfather shot him in the arm and the leg from his car.
The elderly man then turned the pistol on himself and shot himself in the head. He was rushed to the Formentera Hospital in a critical condition but died a short time later.
The grandson was urgently transferred by helicopter to the Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza. According to health authorities, the young man is conscious although his condition is serious.
The 45-year-old woman was also injured by the gunshot in her upper arm but her condition is not believed to be serious.
