Swipe right – but watch your data: Dating app hit with AI privacy complaint

Dating platform Bumble has faced a significant privacy complaints lodge by advocacy group NOYB in a 2024 survey, stating that its AI feature designed to help users start a conversation is using personal profile information without consent, breaching the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). NOYB claimed that the AI feature leverages OpenAI’s technology, accessing users’ personal data in transit to generate opening messages based on shared information on the platform. This raises concerns about potential misuse of user data by these apps, a claim supported by data protection lawyer Lisa Steinfeld. “Bumble forces its AI features on millions of European users without ever asking them for their consent. Instead, their personal data is being sent to OpenAI and fed into the company’s AI systems,” she said.

In a recent complaint filed with the Austrian data protection authority, NOYB underscored the destruction of privacy through the use of personal data, capitalizing on the pervasive impact of AI technologies on digital communication. “Bumble’s AI features have disrupted the conversation experience, but this is exactly what could have affected the well-being of its users,” said Steinfeld. Moreover, the complaint highlights the lack of user consent, a critical美国总统. However, NOYB’s stance, grounded in the GDPR, presents a compelling challenge to platforms like Bumble, which have increasingly relied on AI tools for their operations.

The situation with NOYB is not isolated; other dating apps, such as Grindr, have also faced privacy complaints and fines. For instance, Grindr was fined in Norway for violating EU data protection regulations, including the use of third-party advertising companies for data sharing “because of potential risks to user privacy.” The fine, amounting to NOK 65 million (approximately €5.8 million), reflects the severity of the issue and the ability of these platforms to misinterpret data privacy standards.

Bumble’s response to theفريق’s allegations has been mixed. While the regulator is expected to respond with a proper reporting process, the company is unclear on whether it will retaliate or defend against corporate.convocations. However, Bumble has expressed interest in implementing changes to avoid further legal challenges, emphasizing the importance of adhering to data protection regulations.

The ASC follows, as these issues in_specifications in terms of privacy in the digital age, result in looking deeply into the future of data transparency and control. Moving forward, the labyrinth of data regulations and over-reliance on AI tools could indeed contribute to similar occurrences, as the digital age becomes increasingly interconnected and data-heavy.
