The horse had become trapped in a ‘cattle grid’ on the island of Pollensa
A 61-year-old man has been charged for killing a horse with an axe before chopping up its body on a farm on the Pollensa island of Mallorca. The animal had reportedly been trapped in a ‘cattle grid’ in the road covered by metal bars – on April 9 and was preventing traffic from passing.
According to officers from the Guardia Civil, the owner of the horse killed it with several blows to the head before chopping off the trapped legs and dragging it 300 metres, before abandoning the corpse. The decaying body of the animal was discovered ten days after the event by hikers.
The man insisted that he killed the horse ‘so that he would not suffer’. However, he has subsequently been charged with a crime against domestic animals, which is punishable by up to a year and a half in prison. In addition, he has been reported to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for violating the animal health law.
