A 79-year-old man has been killed and a woman seriously injured in an accident on board a sailing boat moving between the Wadden Islands of Terschelling and Ameland, police said on Friday.
The accident on the charter boat, a two-masted yacht named the Wilhelmina, was reported around 8am. The ship had 19 passengers and two crew on board.
A police spokesman said the boom – a long, heavy pole at the bottom of a sail – came loose and hit several of the passengers. Experts are now trying assess how this happened.
The woman, whose condition is said to be serious, was taken to hospital by air ambulance.
