Two Dutch provinces have had their coronavirus risk level upgraded on the European Union’s weekly map after cases increased.
Overijssel and Friesland switched from yellow to red, signifying high risk, joining North and South Holland and Flevoland. Utrecht fell just short of the threshold for the red zone and could join them next week if positive tests keep increasing.
It is the first time Dutch provinces have been rated as higher risk since July, when the government’s decision to relax rules on nightclubs triggered a surge in infections.
The map, updated weekly by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), is used by EU nations to determine their rules on international travel.
In July Germany briefly classified the Netherlands as a ‘high risk’ area and required Dutch residents crossing the border to produce a negative coronavirus test result.
