The digital certificate is intended to facilitate travel throughout Europe
To date, Spain has issued 19,901,957 digital certificates or ‘Covid passports’. Of those handed out so far, 19,114,964 were to people who are fully vaccinated, 433,753 to those who have recovered from coronavirus and the remaining 353,240 were issued to people who have completed the appropriate diagnostic tests.
According to Spain’s Ministry of Health, the main objective of the certificate is to encourage mobility and facilitate the economic recovery of the country.
In theory, EU Digital Covid Certificate holders should be exempt from free movement restrictions when travelling and Member States should refrain from imposing additional travel restrictions “unless they are necessary and proportionate to safeguard public health”.
