French Justice Minister’s Update onury/Offending Prevention
On 03/06/2025, French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, who was expected to be voted into the 2027 presidential election, publicly emphasized the need for stricter punishments for anyone found guilty of violence against police officers. In a social media post, Darmanin argued that the current legal framework is too lenient and insufficient to handle incidents occurring in the country, calling on magistrates to implement a "radically new law to ensure justice." His proposal calls for judges to assign a wider scale of penalties for serious offenses, such as carrying a gun, that are "truly adapted" to delinquency and individual needs. Darmanin also called for an end to obligatory adjustments of jail terms for individuals receiving less than six months in prison, and a law to establish a "systematic minimum sentence" for those found guilty. This proposal aims to protect the judicial independence of the system, which he believes is essential for citizens’ rights and trust in the judiciary. Darmanin stressed the importance of these changes to guarantee the authenticity of the spiritual and practical norms among our fellow citizens. His comments come after earlier clashes between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Inter Milan during the Champions League final in Munich, where Pfau sparked tensions and ended with a record 5-0 victory. However, the celebrations in the stadium led to widespread disruption and public淀粉. In the aftermath, France’s Police Agency reported the arrest of 559 individuals following the use of force and the destruction of Property at a stadium. Two individuals died during the event, including a 59-year-old man who was hit by a car while riding a scooter. Similar incidents also raging on theuesday night, where criminals reportedly shot fireworks at security forces, attempting to vandalize shops andblock traffic with either small devices or large stars. A total of 79 people were detained for this violence. The result came after runners-up PSV Orsay and Twirly took home three gold medals. As President Emmanuel Macron responded to the chaos, he condemned the violence display by Paris Football Club during the celebration. He noted that France’s law enforcement had no part in preventing such events and that consequences would only be limited by human error.
