Warning new Covid variant dubbed ‘Stratus’ is ‘rapidly spreading’ throughout the UK

This content discusses the emergence and characteristics of the Covid variant known as Stratus, which is a recombinant or “recombinant” strain of the virus. It is described as a descendent of the already highly super virulent Omicron variant, further characterizing its peculiar emergence. The expert warning highlights the rapid spread of Stratus across theUK, noting that it is now the dominant strain in England according to data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This warning emphasizes the increased infectivity of Stratus, which is attributed to new spike mutations that allow it to evade the immune system. The variant has surged in prevalence, with cases in mid-June now accounting for nearly 40% of all Covid-related hospitalizations, up from approximately 10% in May.

Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at the University of Warwick, further elaborates on the scientific basis of this alarm. He explains that the strain resembles Omicron in terms of its SARS-CoV-2 protein but differs due to the introduction of new genetic mutations. Importantly, the professor notes that these mutations make Stratus more susceptible to transmission. By blocking certain immune receptors, the variant can bypass the ability of the human immune system to recognize and neutralize its antigens, making it more “eager” to spread to new regions. Young emphasizes that while the higher infectivity of Stratus is a significant concern, the science community is optimistic that a Covid vaccine will provide protection against severe illness and hospitalization.

Professor Young also points out that the rise in cases of Stratus is linked to the emergence of two Covid variants directly inhaled by a single person. This indicates a “spin-off” or “recombinant” event, where two divergent strains collided in a single infective encounter. Since mid-June, approximately 4,600 cases have been traced, with over 5,000 hospitalizations and 200 deaths, according to UKHSA. This concurrent spread of variants has sparked concerns about a potential surge of infections, though the severity of this rise remains unpredictable.

The socio-epidemiological aspects of Stratus are complex. It is relatively mild compared to other Covid variants, but the mutations making it more infectious have further compounded the alarming trend. The professor argues that the potential for a new wave of infection in the coming months remains uncertain, but public health experts are divided on the extent of the risk. Some gym-goers have traced their symptoms to the Omicron variant, a sign of a broader escalation in variant spread, while others suggest that the strain’s genetic diversity could mask its infectivity.

WorldHealthOrganisation (WHO) has designated Stratus as a “variant under monitoring” in a move to track its progression. Public health officials are now humility on whether Stratus is likely to cause a significant wave of new infections. Despite the increased cases reported in recent weeks, overall Covid cases are declining, with only 5.4% of tests positive for the virus in the last week of April. This decline likely reflects the strain on existing healthcare resources and the resilience of Australia’s healthcare system.

In summary, the emergence and characteristics of Stratus, as a combination of Omicron and a vaccine-marginalizing, have raised concerns about the potential for a new surge of infections. While this strain is more infectious and causes less severe symptoms than Omicron, the science and medical community remain cautious, with no definite proof linking Stratus to a vaccine affecting severe illnesses. Solutions will likely require widespread vaccination, enhanced surveillance of variants of concern, and further research into their potential impact on the population.
