BYD says its new technology charges EVs in five minutes

BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) maker, has announced an “Ultra-fast e-Platform” technology that claims to charge its latest EVs at speeds of up to 1,000 kilowatts, reaching full charge in five to eight minutes, similar to how a standard gasoline-powered car charges. By December 2023, the company plans to launch over 4,000 charging stations across the country, aiming to reduce the time it takes to recharge batteries by eliminating sluggish and crowded charging points. In its earlier years, Chinese drivers increasingly embraced electric vehicles (EVs), with sales of battery-powered and hybrid vehicles surge by 40%, according to BYD’s recent statement.

BYD’s “Super e-Platform” technology incorporates advanced ultra-high voltage and a large current, enabling faster charging, which is essential for EV adoption. The company’s founder, Wang Chuanfu, emphasized that their goal is to make charging times and ranges available to all customers. While their “Flash chargers” operate at peak efficiency, many EV manufacturers, including Tesla, refer to them as “l_templates.”

BYD’sClaim claims that its charging speed is on par with gasoline cars, which typically take 30 to 60 minutes to charge. However, internal reservations have been expressed, with some surveyors指出,BYD’s charging system is stillrouggh and lacks proper safety measures. Additionally, hotels in the Shenzhen market witnessed a 50% surge in the company’s shares, likely driven by rising profits.

The Chinese EV market is in a highly competitive environment, with BYD leading in prices for premium models, while lower-end EVs like the Seagull, priced at around $12,000 in China, still compete for market share. Despite this, BYD is facing internal challenges, including recent product testing failures detected by industry analyst Michael Dunne. While BYD slightly overtakes Tesla in production of battery-powered EVs during 2024, it remains a market leader, vital for its growth. Overall, the situation highlights the paradox of trying to innovate while worrying about safety and efficiency in EV charging systems.
