UK Covid-19: Members of the public react to Boris Johnson bringing in new Coronavirus restrictions following the discovery of the omicron variant discovery.
Six cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in Scotland while officials probe up to 225 ‘possible’ infections — as experts warn they need at least two weeks to analyse the mutant strain.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation is today expected to extend the booster programme to all over-18s amid mounting concern over the variant which has been identified in six European countries so far.
In a hurried tightening of restrictions last night ministers said face masks were again ‘strongly advised’ in schools’ communal areas such as corridors. Some experts have called for the coverings to return to classrooms.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid will today chair an urgent meeting of the G7 amid rising concern over the new variant, which has now been spotted in six European countries. He will also address the Commons at 11am.
But health minister Edward Argar says Britons can still look forward to a ‘normal’ Christmas, and that he does not see any new restrictions being imposed over the festive season.
From tomorrow, face masks will be required in shops and on public transport in England. Anyone who is a contact of someone who has Omicron will also need to self-isolate for ten days regardless of whether they are vaccinated.
