Santander to make major changes for all UK customers from next month

  1. Policy Change introduces a significant shift in how account holders receive alerts: On May 12 onwards, Santander customers will stop receiving regular text alerts on their financial accounts. These alerts have been a go-to service for account holders, offering insights into balances, transaction details, and upcoming charges. The shift represents a major step downward from a norm, altering routines and retaining loyal customers.

  2. New policy requires added monitoring of banking details: Customers will no longer rely solely on text-based alerts. From phone banking platforms or branch visits, they’ll have to actively monitor their accounts to ensure security and transparency. Despite this, essential communications like urgent alerts will continue to be sent via alerts.

  3. Santander plans to remove major branches: The bank plans to shut down at least 95 branches across the UK by 2025, marked the first time in a decade of this(kind of closure. This marks a shift from plans to remove branches in 2021, where up to 111 branches were expected to be removed.

  4. Community banking and payments continue to thrive: Santander will introduce payments options, allowing customers to use the Post Office to make basic banking transactions, such as paying in or withdrawing cash, smooth out the process and reduce charge fees.

  5. Balancing digital and face-to-face banking services: While branches and work cafes involve physical encounters, the bank balances digital banking with human interaction. Customers are given the flexibility to choose which services suit their lifestyle, ensuring they remain invested in the platform while still leveraging these physical touchpoints.

  6. Proceeding with digital banking will keep service quality: Its commitment to digital banking continues, even as it strives to offer the same level of human interaction in face-to-face banking. This dual approach will ensure that Santander remains at the forefront of offering both convenience and effectiveness to its customers.
