World number 11 Diego Schwartzmann won in straight sets against Ricardas Berankis in the first round of the US Open.
Schwartzmann was never in trouble against the Lithuanian as he took five of his nine breka points on offer and was more effective in the serve.
The Argentine was able to rely on his quality to run out a 7-5 6-3 6-3 winner to qualify for the second round at Flushing Meadows.

Elsewhere, temperamental Frenchman Benoit Paire was beaten over four sets by Dusan Lajovic.
The Croatian ran into an early lead in the first set and then held his nerve as Paire came back into contention in the second. Paire then gave Lajovic a scare with a dominant third set win, but ultimately his opponent held his nerve to win 6-3 7-5 2-6 6-4.
Earlier in the season Paire was warned for a lack of effort of Wimbledon, and declared the Australian Open to be ‘s***,’ building on his reputation for attracting controversy.
Peter Gojowczyk defeated 23-seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert in a topsy-turvy, five-set 1-6 6-1 6-2 5-7 6-4.
Switzerlands’ Henri Laaksonen sent John Millman on his way, winning 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-2) 6-1.
In an all-Spanish clash, veteran Feliciano Lopez was the loser of an epic clash with Bernabe Zapata Miralles. Compatriot Miralles won 5-7 7-6(8-6) 4-6 6-3 6-3.
Argentine Facundo Bagnis was the second Argentine through to the second round, as he beat Japanese Taro Daniel 6-3 6-3 6-3.
12th seed Felix Auger Aliassime was worked hard by Russian opponent Evgeny Donskoy, but the Canadian won through on an energy-sapping 7-6(7-0) 3-6 7-6 (6-1) 7-7(10-8) afternoon match-up.
Czech republic player Jiri Vesely was not able to gain an edge over experienced Kevin Anderson, with the South African coming away with the win in their five-set match 7-6(7-1) 4-6 3-6 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-4) first round tie.
Marcos Giron got through to the next round in his home major as he beat France’s Antoine Hoang 6-3 6-4 7-5.
America were guaranteed another player in the second round as John Isner faced Brandon Nakashima, with the latter winning 7-6(9-7) 7-6(8-6) 6-3.
Cristian Garin defeated Norbert Gombos 6-3 4-6 6-4 7-6(7-4), and 30th seed Marin Cilic lost to German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7(4-7) 6-7(3-7) 2-6 1-6 0-2 as Cilic was forced to retire hurt.
Norwegian Casper Ruud, the Open’s eight seed, comfortably ran out a 6-3 6-2 6-2 winner over Yuichi Sugita.
