Fatal Fire Engulfs Ski Resort Hotel in Turkey, Sparking Panic Among Witnesses

The devastating fire that engulfed the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalya, nestled in the Koroglu mountains of Bolu province, Turkey, claimed the lives of at least 76 people and injured 51 others. The tragedy unfolded on a Tuesday, near the start of a two-week winter break for schools, a time when hotels in the region are typically at full capacity. The inferno, believed to have originated in the fourth-floor restaurant, rapidly spread through the wooden-clad, 12-story structure, trapping numerous guests. Horrified witnesses described scenes of chaos and despair as people screamed for help, desperately attempting to escape the rapidly advancing flames and smoke. Some resorted to jumping from windows, a grim testament to the intensity and speed of the fire’s spread.

The aftermath of the fire was marked by grief and a nationwide outpouring of sympathy. Turkish authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze, detaining at least nine individuals, including the hotel owner, for questioning. Six prosecutors were assigned to the case, underscoring the gravity of the incident. Flags at government buildings and Turkish diplomatic missions around the world were lowered to half-staff as the nation observed a day of mourning for the victims. The process of identifying the deceased was painstaking and ongoing, with only 45 of the 76 bodies identified in the immediate aftermath. One of the injured remained in serious condition, while others received treatment and were subsequently released.

Rescue efforts were significantly hampered by the hotel’s precarious location, perched partially on a cliffside. This challenging terrain made access difficult for emergency responders and added to the complexity of the rescue operation. While the hotel had reportedly undergone inspections in both 2021 and 2024, with no fire safety issues flagged by the fire department at the time, the tragedy highlighted the vulnerability of such structures, particularly in remote locations. The combination of the wooden construction and the rapid spread of the fire contributed to the devastating loss of life.

Eyewitness accounts painted a harrowing picture of the unfolding disaster. People trapped inside the hotel cried out for help, their pleas growing more desperate as the fire intensified. Onlookers, feeling helpless, watched in horror as some guests, driven to desperation by the encroaching flames, jumped from the upper floors. Hotel staff from neighboring establishments and other witnesses attempted to provide assistance, bringing clothes, water, and even mattresses in a desperate attempt to cushion the falls of those jumping from the burning building. Ladders were also propped against the walls in a bid to facilitate escapes.

Among these impromptu rescuers was Baris Salgur, a cleaner at a nearby hotel, who described the heart-wrenching scene. He recounted hearing the desperate cries of trapped guests, pleading for help and urging others to contact the fire department. The height of the building and the intensity of the fire made direct intervention incredibly difficult, leaving those on the ground with a profound sense of helplessness. Salgur witnessed several people jump from the upper floors, including two women trapped in a room engulfed by flames. The memory of these desperate acts, driven by sheer terror, remained etched in his mind.

One particularly tragic incident involved a man trapped on one of the upper floors, clutching a baby and desperately calling for a mattress to throw the child onto. Despite attempts to calm him and assure him that help was on the way, the baby tragically succumbed to smoke inhalation before firefighters could reach them. This devastating loss underscored the speed and ferocity of the fire, and the immense challenges faced by rescuers. In the days following the tragedy, funeral prayers were held across Turkey for the victims, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attending the funeral of eight members of a single family, highlighting the widespread impact of the disaster and the collective grief of the nation. The president’s words, “Our hearts are broken,” resonated with a nation grappling with the enormity of the loss.
