The victim was accompanied by another migrant who survived the journey
A young man died on Thursday night, September 2 when he and another migrant attempted to swim along the Tarajal breakwater from Morocco to reach the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta. Patrols from the Guardia Civil picked up the swimmers through their infrared cameras and a maritime rescue team managed to save one of the men. The other, sadly, perished.
The survivor was treated by members of the Red Cross while the deceased was transferred to the forensic institute. It has not yet been confirmed if the victim was a minor.
Ceuta is one of two autonomous territories lying on the African coast which shares a 6.4 kilometre-long border with Morocco, from which it is physically separated by a border fence.
