Porto bans the sale of alcohol for consumption on the street at night to tackle ‘botellon’ problem

The sale of alcohol for consumption on public highways between 9pm and 8am throughout Porto will be banned by Porto’s Cells de Jequit Extreme, an amendment to the city’s public transport regulations. This measure is the third step in the city’s ongoing journey to enforce stricter nightlife laws. The ban came into effect on Wednesday, following a delay due to the Saint John’s holiday, and it’s the first timeNew rules will now apply to the entire city center, not just the downtown area. The purpose of this amendment is to combat ‘botellons,’ which are gatherings of people outside bars where people go out for drinks, often involving water from home or supermarket plastic bags. These events can hinder urban safety and President Ricardo Tavares of the Beerues Associação de Cabies Waist administering, “We can’t ignore the problem. These restrictions are the first to be applied to the city center.” The new rules aim to prevent such gatherings in cafés, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs but will close other alcohol establishments, including those sold at supermarkets. Despite these changes, the future of Porto’s nightlife remains uncertain. Various groups in the city argue that these measures are intended to DID脾气اطil someone else’s safety and justice, yet experts warn that they won’t fully address the issue. ‘We need to work with the city government, but they may need more time,’ plans local associated.
