ECB’s Lagarde warns of severe economic hit from Trump’s trade wars

Christine Lagarde’s Concerns About Trump’s Trade War

Christine Lagarde, the ECB President, recently informed the BBC that the US- chantel Hearing Tuesday extended the aggressiveness of the ongoing trade tensions, which could pose significant economic challenges globally. Lagarde emphasized that rising tariffs, including a 200% escalation on French wine and an increased reciprocal tariff soon to be implemented, could result in severe consequences for prices and economic stability. She warned that broader trade tensions, such asINT可能出现大幅 revenue cuts,物价上涨和金融冲击。

The State of Trade Tensions
The US has popped up as a key market for ECB-facing European producers, accounting for approximately 5% of global beverages, spirits and vinegar products exported in 2024 by the EU. Having returned from January, Trump has continually escalated trade tensions, with tariffs increasingly impacting business, consumer and investor activities. As a result, British companies areModeled to mitigate economic activity through heightened uncertainty。She stated, "初’}市的主导力量—— retali者的反应——以及为此而发展的策略——都会损害经济增长。"
"这项霸权举措正在削弱公司的业务活动。"尽管欧共体政府已表示将继续寻求对话,但她还指出,由于实施这一措施的时间滞后,……….的热情。

Inflation Challenges
Lagarade also addressed inflation, signaling that the ECB faces a tougher bv until the oil and gas sector reached a 7% bump in 2022, while energy prices peaked, contributing to a seven-month lag in price adjustments. Interestingly, energy and services inflation had NOT peaked since 2002, further complicating the ECB’s ability to stabilize prices。 For example, energy inflation peaked last October 2022, but services inflation delayed its peak until July 2023, a nine-month lag. These delayed effects make it harder for the ECB to navigate price dynamics asynchronously across different industries。

Rate Cuts and Inflation Dynamics
As inflation begins to cool, ECB authorities are preparing to lower interest rates to help sustain the eurozone’s slowing economy, aiming for 2% inflation by early 2025. Lagarde warned that while this measure would combat inflation, future shocks, such as from trade Conflicts, supply chain disruptions or climate-related disruptions, could lead to alternative policy responses。

The Shift in Communication Strategy
As economic uncertainty intensifies, Lagarde has called for a change in communication strategies. She emphasizes that ECB should shift from rigid forward guidance, which sets expectation for future rate decisions, to a focus on explaining the institution’s reaction function。Instead of imposing a fixed target, the ECB will construct key economic indicators—such as the base price, wage growth, and monetary policy transmission—to guide its decision-making。
