Is it safe to travel to Naples? Italy prepares for possible evacuations amid earthquake tremors

The Naples area, along the southern Mediterranean Ocean, has experienced significant seismic activity in recent days. In May, a massive 4.4 magnitude earthquake relocated the epicenter to Mount Vesuvius, with additional tremors detected in Vesp Romeo. The area, particularly around the iconic spot known as Campi Flegrei, is a wildly active volcanic area. This region is the largest in Europe and features a supervolcano (a volcanic episode) that was last erupting in 1538. Because of the increased surface pressure beneath the volcanic material, it has become a hotspot for seismic activity.

Residents and employees of nearby Pozzuoli Beach caretfully opted to evacuate the Sunday evening when the strongest seismic activity in 40 years occurred. The government has announced €500 million as a budget for evacuation plans and safety interventions, including strengthening buildings to prevent collapses. However, the risk of further surges remains, raising fears of enforced evacuations.

The Red Zone, which includes towns like Pozzuoli and Bacoli, is where residents would likely be evacuated if an eruption occurs.
