The trial of ‘France’s biggest paedophile offender’ opens in Vannes, Brittany, on Monday

Joël Le Scouarnec has been accused of aggravated rape and sexual assault against 299 victims, including most minors, between the years 1989 and 2014. This “extraordinary” case was brought against him in 2022, following two years of preparation byTrial Court, making him eligible for a maximum sentence of 20 years, following sexual violence against 20 minors in the first trial and over 300 potential victims in the second. Le Scouarnec, a 74-year-old former surgeon who declined to take a hospital conviction, was previously sentenced in 2005 after possession of child pornography images had led to an initial prison sentence. He accepted a second trial in Vannes with the support of his lawyer, Stéphane Kellenberger, who also called him a “pearl” of France’s paedophile crime community. Le Scouarnec now faces a length of imprisonment of 111 rapes and 189ual assault, following his extensive experience as a surgeon and his association with institutions where he received training, including the Vannes Criminal Court.

The case was set to begin tomorrow, 24 February, in the Morbihan Criminal Court. The trial required a specially createdliveto provide confidential evidence and witness scarce conditions, allowing access to Lorient’s former law faculty, which Le Scouarnec’s home is now.
