OpenAI launches ‘study mode’ to encourage students to use ChatGPT responsibly

conversations and email has been effective in stimulating user thought强奸 the user, making clear that in a world filled with technology and data, the ability for users to stay focused and farm on, is a crucial survival skill.

But with the increasing stress and pressure levels of the modern world, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in education, particularly in schools and universities, has become—what the authors refer to as “illegal.” In fact, academic cheating — the deliberate misuse of materials to gain an unfair advantage — is becoming an increasingly pressing issue in academia. A recent study identified nearly 7,000 proven cases of students cheating to cheat in the 2023-2024 school year, highlighting the growing concerns around the misuse of AI tools in education. This underscores the importance of ensuring that AI tools are used responsibly, and that academic integrity remains a top priority.

The authors have launched a new feature on the open-source platformPlatforms, aimed at promoting ” Responsible academic use” of AI tools. This feature, known as “学习模式 restoration,” is designed to assist students in completing their homework, preparing for exams, and gaining a deeper understanding of course material through an interactive and step-by-step approach. Unlike traditional chatbots that provide ready-made answers, this feature encourages students to engage with the material in a more meaningful and personalized way. OpenAI, the creators of the original ChatGPT, describes this tool as “to help students ‘engage with ChatGPT to actually support a learning process.'”

The development of this feature coincided with growing concerns within academia about the misuse of AI tools. For instance, a recent investigation from The Guardian revealed nearly 7,000 cases where students had cheated by having ChatGPT generate solutions or provide incorrect responses. These examples highlight the serious issues facing education institutions around the world. However, researchers like Jayna Devani, OpenAI’s head of international education, have pointed out that AI has been increasingly used for cheating in higher education.

Devani emphasized that addressing academic cheating requires a “whole industry discussion” to reconsider how students’ work is assessed and set clear guidelines on the responsible use of AI. In some areas, even the administration of exams may need to change to ensure that cheating is not tolerated. Moreover, the rise of student aid, platforms like WhatsApp where students can easily share solutions and access additional resources, has further seemingly reduced the need for serious academic integrity.

The authors suggest that the proposed “学习模式 restoration” could play a significant role in addressing these issues by engaging students in collaborative problem-solving and critical thinking. By uploading past exam papers and working through them together with the tool, students can observe detailed explanations and identify areas they may not fully understand on their own. This approach could potentially enhance their learning experience and foster a deeper understanding of the material.

However, the authors also note that the platform does not effectively prevent cheating, as permission is required for users to request direct answers to their prompts. This limitation raises questions about how robust the tool is in maintaining academic integrity without encouraging cheating. While the platform has been praised for its ability to facilitate independent learning, the concern is whether it will finally expose cheating as a reality and force a change in academic standards.

In conclusion, the launch of “学习模式 restoration” marks a step toward a more responsible use of AI tools in education. By providing interactive learning support and promoting collaborative problem-solving, the tool could help students better engage with academic material and reduce the risk of cheating. However, the authors caution that the industry will need to work together to ensure that academic integrity remains a top priority, and that AI tools are used responsibly.
