High-Speed Rail Service Connects Paris and Berlin with Fares Starting at €59

A New Era of Rail Travel: Connecting Paris and Berlin with High-Speed Efficiency

The European rail landscape is poised for a transformative upgrade with the introduction of a groundbreaking high-speed train service directly connecting the hearts of Paris and Berlin. Launching on December 16th, this highly-anticipated daytime connection promises a faster, more convenient, and environmentally conscious travel experience compared to existing options. This innovative service marks a significant milestone, offering the first direct link between the city centers of these two major European capitals.

Currently, daytime travel between Paris and Berlin necessitates a connecting train, extending the journey to a tedious nine to ten and a half hours. The existing ÖBB Nightjet overnight train, while offering a direct route, operates only three times a week and takes approximately 13 hours and 15 minutes. Furthermore, this overnight service faced an eight-month suspension due to extensive rail network maintenance, resuming operations only recently in early November. The new direct service, in contrast, will operate daily, significantly reducing travel time to approximately eight hours.

The new high-speed train will depart Paris Gare de l’Est at 9:55 am, arriving at Berlin Hauptbahnhof at 6:03 pm. The return journey will depart Berlin at 11:54 am, reaching Paris at 7:55 pm. This streamlined schedule eliminates the need for transfers, offering seamless travel between the two capital cities. The inaugural journey, scheduled for December 16th, will be marked by the presence of dignitaries including François Delattre, the French ambassador to Germany, and Kai Wegner, the governing mayor of Berlin, underscoring the significance of this new rail connection.

Travelers can now book tickets for this highly anticipated service, with prices starting at a competitive €59 for a one-way ticket. The train will make stops in Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, and Frankfurt along its route, offering convenient access to these intermediate cities. This new connection aligns with the shared objective of France and Germany to promote sustainable transportation, offering a significantly greener alternative to air travel. According to Alain Krakovitch, managing director of TGV-Intercités, the train journey generates only one-hundredth of the CO2 emissions compared to flying between Paris and Berlin, making it a compelling choice for environmentally conscious travelers.

This new high-speed link arrives just in time for the Christmas travel season, providing a comfortable and efficient way to visit loved ones or explore the vibrant Christmas markets in either city. The convenient schedule and affordable pricing are expected to attract a large number of passengers seeking a hassle-free travel experience. This initiative not only facilitates travel between Paris and Berlin but also strengthens the cultural and economic ties between France and Germany.

Deutsche Bahn (DB), the German national railway operator, is committed to improving its overall reliability, addressing concerns surrounding recent punctuality issues. In both 2022 and 2023, over a third of long-distance trains experienced delays, attributed to factors such as short-term construction works, rail repairs, staff strikes, and extreme weather events. DB is actively working to enhance its services by introducing more long-distance routes with fewer stops and extending the pre-booking window from six to twelve months. These measures, combined with ongoing infrastructure improvements, are expected to gradually reduce delays over the next two years, bolstering the efficiency and reliability of Germany’s rail network. The launch of the new Paris-Berlin high-speed service represents a significant step forward in promoting sustainable and efficient rail travel within Europe.
