The Rise of Malnutrition in Gaza

The UN reported Tuesday that the rate of malnutrition among children in the Gaza Strip had doubled since Israel severely restricted food entry in March. According to the United Nations Randomized Controltraial Agency (UNRWA), in June, among nearly 16,000 children under age 5 who were screened at UN clinics, 10.2% were found to be acutely malnourished.
This starkly unders estimate of malnutrition was underscored by data from UNICEF, which documented around 5,870 cases of malnutrition among children in June, the fourth consecutive month of increases. While last year saw 2,000 cases, UNICEF attributed this fluctuation to the extended three-week water contamination spillover in March, April, and May, within Gaza’s population of over 2 million Palestinians.
