A Life of Promise, Cut Short by a Moment of Violence

In a tragedy that has left a Birmingham community shattered, Berhane Tsegay, a 33-year-old man described by his family as “kind, loving, gentle, and humble,” died following a violent altercation at a nightclub. The incident occurred on September 26, 2025, at the Sebene Habesha club, where Berhane was pushed down a flight of stairs by another patron, Simon Gebrengus. Captured on CCTV, the assault caused catastrophic head injuries. Despite the urgent efforts of medical professionals, Berhane’s life could not be saved, and he passed away three days later. This single, brutal act ended not only a life but also a journey of faith, hard work, and aspiration, plunging a family into profound grief and robbing a community of a cherished member.

Berhane Tsegay was far more than a victim; he was a man of strong integrity and deep faith, diligently building a future. His family’s tribute paints a picture of a dedicated individual who worked tirelessly to learn new skills in construction and other trades, aiming to create stability for himself and to support his loved ones. He was respected as a person of honesty and respect, true to his values. Moreover, his spiritual life was central to his identity. Serving as a Deacon both in his native Eritrea and within the United Kingdom, he was regarded by peers and clergy as a devoted and principled future leader. His potential to contribute positively to society was immense, a bright path abruptly and tragically darkened.

The legal proceedings following this loss have brought a measure of accountability, though no true solace. Simon Gebrengus, 44, of Erdington, was arrested shortly after the incident by West Midlands Police. Initially providing an inconsistent account, the clarity of the CCTV evidence and diligent police investigation revealed his culpability. Gebrengus pleaded guilty to manslaughter and, on May 5, was sentenced to six years in prison. The case involves a second individual, Bibi Gilzgi, who has also admitted to manslaughter but has denied a charge of murder; his trial is scheduled to begin early next year. Detective Sergeant Robert Moir noted that the investigative team worked hard to secure justice, their thoughts continually with Berhane’s enduringly resilient family.

For Berhane’s family, the pain is immeasurable and permanent. In their public statement, they express a “profound and devastating impact,” stating that words cannot fully describe their loss. They mourn not just a son and brother, but a future spiritual leader whose warmth, laughter, and steadfast support enriched everyone around him. His absence is felt daily, a void that will remain for the rest of their lives. The family praised his strong work ethic and great potential, all now devastatingly unrealized. Their grief is a weight they will always carry, a stark reminder of how a moment of violence can irrevocably alter countless lives.

The broader community, too, feels this loss deeply. Berhane was a connective thread, respected and integrated within both his Eritrean heritage and his UK home. His death is not a private sorrow but a public rupture, diminishing the social fabric. The incident underscores the tragic human cost of conflicts that escalate into physical violence, outcomes that are often irreversible. It serves as a somber reflection on the fragility of life and the enduring consequences of impulsive actions, consequences that ripple far beyond the individuals directly involved.

While the sentence handed to Simon Gebrengus represents a judicial conclusion, for Berhane Tsegay’s loved ones, there is no conclusion. Their tribute stands as a powerful testament to a life lived with purpose and faith—a life that should have continued. They honor his character and condemn the circumstances that stole it away. As the remaining legal processes unfold, the family’s strength, acknowledged by the detectives involved, remains a poignant counterpart to their enduring sorrow. Berhane’s story is ultimately one of a promising future violently erased, leaving behind a legacy of love and a community forever marked by his absence.
