Greece Announces Initiative to Reduce Internet Usage Among Youth

The Greek government has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting minors from the potential harms of internet addiction. A key component of this initiative is the development of “Kids Wallet,” a government-operated mobile application designed to empower parents with greater control over their children’s online activities. Scheduled for launch in March 2025, the app will be integrated with a widely used government services platform and linked to an existing digital identification app for adults, creating a unified system for age verification and online safety.

Kids Wallet aims to address the growing concerns surrounding excessive and inappropriate internet use among children under 15. The app will leverage advanced algorithms to monitor online activity and enforce strict authentication processes, effectively preventing minors from accessing age-restricted content and platforms. By providing parents with a centralized tool to oversee their children’s digital engagement, the Greek government seeks to create a safer online environment for young users. The ambitious goal is to have Kids Wallet pre-installed on all smartphones sold in Greece by the end of 2025, ensuring widespread adoption and accessibility.

This initiative represents a significant shift in online child protection, moving beyond existing regulations in many European countries by introducing more direct government involvement. The app’s age verification feature is a crucial element in addressing the challenge of accurately determining a user’s age online. By linking the app to a government-issued digital identification system, Kids Wallet aims to provide a reliable and verifiable method of age confirmation, preventing minors from misrepresenting their age to access restricted content and protecting adults from unwarranted age restrictions.

The broader national plan encompasses a range of measures to promote online safety for minors. In addition to Kids Wallet, the government will launch a dedicated website providing parents with resources and information about existing control features and best practices for online safety. This resource will empower parents with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the digital landscape and protect their children from online risks.

While generally well-received, the government’s increasing involvement in online services has sparked some criticism from digital rights and religious groups. However, the convenience and efficiency of government-operated apps and platforms, particularly in bypassing bureaucratic procedures, have contributed to their popularity in Greece. The government’s online child protection measures are seen as a proactive step towards addressing the challenges of the digital age, ensuring the safety and well-being of young users.

The Greek government’s comprehensive approach to online child safety underscores the importance of parental involvement and government oversight in navigating the digital world. By providing parents with the tools and resources they need to manage their children’s online activities, and by implementing robust age verification mechanisms, Greece aims to create a safer and more responsible online environment for its young citizens. The initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the evolving challenges of the digital age, balancing individual freedoms with the need to protect vulnerable users online. The long-term impact of these measures will undoubtedly be closely watched by other countries grappling with similar issues.
