Brit, 28, dies in ‘tragic accident’ during Thailand holiday as mum says her ‘heart is shattered’

The vibrant life of 28-year-old Liam Anelay, a young man from Liverpool filled with the spirit of adventure, was tragically cut short on a sun-drenched road in Phuket, Thailand. Liam was just three weeks into a dream trip exploring Asia with a group of friends, an experience meant to be a chapter of joy and discovery. On January 28, 2026, while riding a moped to meet his pals, a stationary car unexpectedly performed a U-turn directly into his path. The driver, unaware of Liam’s approach, completed the maneuver with devastating consequences. The collision was immediate and severe, marking a sudden, violent end to a journey that had just begun.

In the heartbreaking aftermath, the driver remained at the scene, providing what comfort he could by cradling Liam until emergency services arrived. Liam was rushed to Chalong Hospital, but the injuries he sustained were too extensive; he was pronounced dead that same afternoon. An inquest held at the Gerard Marjella Courthouse in Liverpool on June 11th detailed the brutal physical toll of the crash, which included multiple fractures to his skull, ribs, and legs. Area Coroner Helen Rimmer officially recorded his cause of death as multiple injuries resulting from a road traffic collision, concluding the legal proceedings with a formal finding of a “tragic accident.”

Beyond the clinical facts of the inquest lies the profound and enduring grief of a family shattered by loss. Liam, who lived near Liverpool city centre and worked as a production line operator, was a beloved son, cousin, and friend. His mother, Christina, poured her anguish into a social media tribute, writing, “My baby boy… my heart is so badly shattered into a million pieces.” Her words capture the unbearable reality of a parent surviving their child, expressing a love that now exists as a constant ache. She pleaded with him to keep shining down on her, a testament to a bond that not even death can fully sever.

The ripple effect of Liam’s passing extended throughout his family and community. His cousin, Jason Ding, shared his own poignant remembrance, highlighting the enduring image of Liam’s “cheeky smile as a kid” that matured into the demeanor of a “gentleman.” Jason’s tribute acknowledged Liam as a credit to his family, especially his parents, and expressed a firm belief in a future reunion. These public outpourings paint a picture of a young man cherished not just for his presence, but for his character—a curious, smiling individual who left a deep impression on those who knew him.

Coroner Rimmer, in offering her official condolences to the family, underscored the sudden and accidental nature of the tragedy. There was no malice, only a fatal moment of misjudgment on a foreign road that irrevocably altered countless lives. The incident serves as a stark and somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by travelers, even amidst the excitement of adventure, and the fragile line that separates a holiday of a lifetime from an unthinkable nightmare.

Liam Anelay’s story, therefore, is not merely a news item about a traffic accident abroad. It is the narrative of a life filled with potential and love, abruptly concluded. He is remembered by the legal system as a victim of a road traffic collision, but by his mother, he is forever “my beautiful gorgeous smiling boy.” By his cousin, he is the “little curious” soul now flying high. His legacy exists in these memories—in the cheeky grin, the spirit of adventure that took him to Thailand, and the enduring, shattered love of a family that must now find a way to carry on, holding him in their hearts until they meet again.
