‘I thought it was nothing’ – man’s brief headaches turned out to be a tumour

Nico Archdale, a 32-year-old equine expert from North Wales, was living a life dedicated to health and routine when his world was irrevocably changed by a seemingly minor symptom. He had recently committed to building better habits—eating well, staying active, and taking care of himself—when he began experiencing sharp, fleeting headaches each morning upon sitting up. The pain was intense but brief, vanishing within seconds and leaving him feeling completely normal. This transience made it easy to dismiss; Nico brushed off the episodes as inconsequential and carried on with his busy life as a bloodstock agent in the horse racing community. He had no reason to suspect that these quick “head rushes” were a harbinger of something grave, believing his commitment to wellness would shield him from serious illness.

However, the nature of the headaches gradually shifted, evolving from a curious morning occurrence to a frequent disturbance triggered by ordinary actions like coughing, sneezing, or bending over. After three persistent weeks, a growing sense of unease led Nico to seek medical advice. The response was swift and alarming: a neurologist arranged an emergency MRI scan within hours of his examination. The following day, Nico arrived at the hospital with his family and received the devastating news that he had brain cancer. The diagnosis was a profound shock, shattering his perception of his own health. He learned that a tumour, not a small one but the size of a ping pong ball, was growing in his head, compressing his brain and causing the symptoms he had tried to ignore. In an instant, his reality shifted from managing minor headaches to confronting a life-threatening condition.

Nico’s treatment began with urgent surgery on January 31, just weeks after his diagnosis in early January. The operation removed the tumour, but his journey was far from over. He now undergoes radiotherapy five days a week, with a planned six-month course of chemotherapy to follow. The cumulative toll of these treatments has been physically transformative, reducing his formerly active lifestyle to a state where even basic tasks like walking are challenging. Nico describes this adjustment as immensely difficult, noting that the process drains his energy and weakens him further as it progresses. Emotionally, he faces the daunting reality of a rare brain cancer with no known cause—a condition his doctors attributed simply to terrible luck. Despite this, he has consciously adopted a survival mindset, focusing on positivity and acceptance since the diagnosis itself was beyond his control.

The mental and emotional strain of his new limitations is a constant battle. Nico finds the inability to be active profoundly frustrating and admits that doing very little is surprisingly mentally draining. His life feels suspended, yet he is determined to cling to normality, seeing friends and family whenever his scant energy permits. This ordeal has also illuminated the profound value of his relationships; the support from his close-knit family and friends, as well as from his colleagues in the horse racing world, has been a cornerstone of his resilience. He feels overwhelmingly lucky to be surrounded by such care, and this community strength helps him navigate the harrowing road ahead, even as he strives to stay strong for those who are supporting him.

Looking toward the future, Nico holds firm to his professional passion, hoping to return to his work as a bloodstock agent for the rest of his life. Beyond his career, he has set an extraordinary personal goal to fuel his determination: completing a Hyrox fitness challenge, which combines running with eight functional workout stations. This ambitious aim is not just a personal target but a charitable mission, raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and already garnering over £30,000. For Nico, this challenge represents a beacon of hope and purpose, a reason to push forward through the grueling treatment. It is also a public testament to his fight, intended to show others facing similar battles that they are not alone.

Nico’s story is a stark reminder of how swiftly life can pivot from routine to crisis, and how symptoms that seem trivial can conceal a serious underlying condition. His experience underscores the importance of listening to one’s body and seeking medical advice for persistent changes, no matter how minor they appear. Through his ongoing treatment, the immense physical and emotional challenges, and his remarkable resolve to find purpose in a Hyrox challenge, Nico Archdale embodies a blend of vulnerability and strength. His journey highlights not only the brutal unpredictability of illness but also the sustaining power of community, hope, and the human spirit’s capacity to aim for light even in the darkest of times.
