Pharmacists ‘using personal savings to stay open’ as a 4 in 10 can’t pay bills

The pharmacy owners in England face severe financial difficulties. Over 90% can’t continue their business as contracts with the NHS expire, citing that 4 in 10咒s are unable to pay wholesaler bills on time in the past year, and nearly half rely on personal savings to support their operations. The CPE, which includes over 10,000 community pharmacies, warned that funding for its services has been decreasing by 30% on a real-term basis over the past decade.

Rising costs, coupled with reduced funding, have made pharmacy businesses challenging—if they are unable to pay wholesalers or manage their personal savings. Many community pharmacies have closed branches or incurred financial illteration due to lack of space. They also struggle to raise funds, exacerbated by the financial pressure tape that follows after funding cuts.
