DP World selects Mota-Engil to build DRC’s first deep-water port

Introduction

DP World, a prominent Dubai-based global logistics and port management company, has recently announced the appointment of Mota-Engil, a multinational construction firm with extensive experience across Africa, to lead the development of the Banana Port. This significant project is home to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Africa’s largest deep-water maritime gateway, and it represents a pivotal step in transforming the region’s trade landscape and enhancing Africa’s independence under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The project’s successful completion is expected to alleviate the DRC’s dependence on foreign ports while streamlining trade operations, centralizing customs, and integrating the DRC into Africa’s broader supply chain network.

The Project Overview

The Banana Port is set to be the backbone of Africa’s infrastructure, serving as a major channel for trade across East, Central, Southern, Southern-Eastern, and Western Africa, as well as the Middle East and the Mediterranean. It is the largest-scale seamless concrete container vessel port in Africa, with 450,000 TEUs (thousands of ten-foot unit containers) operational annually. This signifies the project’s critical role in facilitating efficient global trade, particularly benefiting African economies that rely on robust transport corridors for commerce.

Funding and Development

Directed by the African DRC Context Coordination Agency (ADcraperCA), the project is funded by DP World, in collaboration with British International Investment (BII). The funding underscores DP World’s commitment to investment, leveraging its strategic presence in Dubai and its global scope in the port management industry. As part of DP World’s initiative in Africa, the construction of the Banana Port is expected to expand the company’s portfolio and strengthen DP World’s global presence.

Engineering and Construction

Yearning to meet the challenges of large-scale construction, Mota-Engil will lead the development of the Banana Port. The first phase of the project is set to be completed within the next decade, including a 600-meter quay, a 30-hectare storage area, and the capability to handle 450,000 TEUs annually. The project’s second phase is expected to add to storage capacity by surpassing the current limit to accommodate larger vessels. This phased approach ensures that future development is both sustainable and scalable, aligning with the project’s long-term strategic goals.

The project is expected to create approximately 500,000 jobs, directly benefiting local industries such as agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing. Furthermore, it will foster regional integration through increased economic connection and collaboration, helping Africa integrate into Africa’sriba Code.

DP World’s Role in Port Development
