‘It’s only a matter of time’ – locals fear death on road where people were ‘thrown 30ft in the air’

For over a quarter of a century, the residents of Vulcan Street in Oldham, Greater Manchester, have lived with a gnawing, persistent fear. Their anxiety is rooted in a simple, terrifying fact: their long, largely straight residential road feels more like a racetrack than a community street. This fear was tragically cemented 26 years ago when Sharon McLean’s young son was mowed down by a car, suffering a broken femur that left him hospitalized for 11 agonizing weeks. Today, as a new generation of children plays nearby, that same dread permeates the neighborhood, with many convinced it is only a matter of time before history repeats itself, potentially with even more devastating consequences.

Sharon McLean embodies the lasting trauma inflicted by the street’s dangers. More than two decades later, the memory of her son’s accident is painfully fresh. “It’s terrible,” she says, her frustration palpable. “My son was knocked down here 26 years ago and still nothing has been done.” Her concern has now shifted to her granddaughter’s safety, a worry that compounds with each passing year. She observes how drivers accelerate when the weather is good, turning the street into a hazard zone. Her story is not an isolated one; locals speak of a grim catalogue of incidents on Vulcan Street, where people have suffered broken bones, sustained long-term injuries, and, in shocking accounts, been thrown “30 feet in the air” by the force of collisions.

This pervasive sense of insecurity fundamentally alters daily life for families. Ordinary activities become exercises in vigilance and stress. Parents speak of the constant, exhausting need to double-check and remain hyper-cautious whenever their children are outside. Jordie Foote captures this universal parental anxiety, stating simply, “It’s scary to worry when your kids go out.” For Jorden Rosevere, the fear is so acute that she resorts to using a toddler safety harness and reins for her young son, Jace, even on short trips to the shops. “I’m just scared even going to the shops if he goes off and someone is coming,” she explains, highlighting how the threat of speeding vehicles, especially motorbikes at night, robs the community of simple freedoms and peace of mind.

Amidst this climate of fear, there is a profound and growing sense of frustration and betrayal. Residents feel their repeated pleas for basic traffic-calming measures—speed bumps, traffic lights, lowered speed limits—have fallen on deaf ears for decades. Julie Smith voices the community’s exasperation, pointing out that she tried to get road bumps installed over 25 years ago. She echoes a grim sentiment shared by many: “I think it’s going to take a kid to be killed for something to happen.” This belief that authorities will only act reactively, after a worst-case scenario, rather than proactively to prevent one, fosters a deep disillusionment with the very systems meant to protect them.

The political response, while present, has so far failed to translate into the tangible changes residents desperately seek. Labour Councillor Josh Charters has repeatedly highlighted the dangers, following incidents like a young boy’s hospitalization in July 2023 and further accidents as recently as May of this year. He warns bluntly, “although we are lucky we haven’t had a fatality on this road, it’s only a matter of time.” He has called for urgent onsite meetings with the council’s highways team and police to discuss concrete interventions like speed cushions or road humps, particularly as new housing developments in the area promise to increase both population and traffic.

In response to mounting pressure, an Oldham Council spokesperson acknowledged the concerns, stating that road safety is a priority and that the authority is working with police and councillors to review the issues. The council notes that the review will consider what measures may be appropriate, “particularly as new housing developments come forward in the area.” For the weary residents of Vulcan Street, however, such statements ring hollow after 26 years of inaction. They are left in a painful limbo, guarding their children against a known and persistent danger, their daily lives a testament to a community’s resilience in the face of official neglect, and their hopes pinned on the fragile hope that tragedy will not be the final catalyst for change.
