Martin Lewis’ MSE says there’s ‘days left’ to claim £140 if you worked in Covid

Understanding the Rise of Home Work post-Pandemic
In recent years, many people around the world have found themselves working from home due to the global pandemic, leading to a significant change in employment patterns. While many still worked in offices, the lack of back pay and the financial strain on businesses have created a need for support and relief in various financial areas. A letter from the UK government in late 2020 introduced the Money Saving Expert (MSE) program, providing help for people who had compensation for work done remotely. This program, which includes tax relief, liquidity advice, and advisor services, became a valuable resource for those struggling to meet financial obligations.

Eligibility for the Money Saving Expert Program
The MSE program allows individuals to claim up to £140 tax relief from HMRC, which expires on the following Saturday, April 5, 2025. Eligibility is based on specific circumstances, including working from home during certain periods. For example, if someone’s £140 tax band is a basic rate (10%) and they worked from home between April 6, 2020, and April 5, 2022, they qualify. However, the rules were extended to allow this claim up to four tax years back from 2022. This means people could only apply for relief until March 31, 2026, if they wanted to backdate the claim.

The Factors That Determine Tax Relief
The amount of tax relief individuals can claim depends on their tax band and the specifics of their circumstances. For instance, a basic rate taxpayer in 2023 who worked from home would receive approximately £62.40 per year. For those in higher tax bands, the relief could go up to £140.40. The relief is calculated based on flat rates rather than individual expenses.

Steps to Claim the Tax Relief
Claiming tax relief is a straightforward process, especially for remote workers. Using the government’s online form, individuals can apply for relief, even if they had a self-assessment tax return for the previous year. Failure to file a self-assessment tax return necessitates writing to HMRC and amend the returns. The online process is user-friendly, with guidance available at HMRC’s official website to help claimers avoid mistakes.

The Impact of Changes in Policies
The current £140 tax relief limit has meant some increase in costs for those who work from home, especially for remote employees. While these employers have issued clauses in HMRC’s tax guidelines that cover the increase in home office costs, the ELR limits make it a challenge to claim this relief as intended. The risks of h>Email exceeding tax bands and the systematic pressure to make self-isolated payments that back-date the claim are significant. As the government works to reform these policies, it may take more time to find a way to stabilize access to this relief.

In summary, the Money Saving Expert program has provided a way for people to weather the current financial storm by offering tax relief and other financial assistance. While the rules have been expanded to make claims more flexible, challenges remain to ensure that this assistance is available to those who need it most. Understanding the importance of remote work, the impact of increasing costs, and the need for adherence to various policies continues to be key in navigating this complex financial landscape.
