Steve Davis’ divorce from wife, affair with 19-year-old dancer and unlikely new job

While the nickname “Mr. Boring” clung to Steve Davis throughout his unparalleled snooker career, his life beyond the green baize has proven that label to be a profound mischaracterization. As a pundit at the World Snooker Championship, the 68-year-old legend represents a sport he once dominated, securing six world titles and holding the world No.1 ranking for seven consecutive seasons in the 1980s. His clinical consistency, which yielded 28 ranking titles and 15 Triple Crown events, combined with a famously composed demeanor and measured interview style, painted a public portrait of a man devoid of flair. This image was so entrenched that the satirical show Spitting Image mockingly dubbed him “interesting.” Yet, the decades since his competitive peak have revealed a complex individual whose private life and later passions are anything but bland.

This complexity was thrust into the public eye through personal turmoil. In the midst of his sporting zenith, Davis found himself at the center of a kiss-and-tell scandal involving a brief affair with a 19-year-old dancer named Cheree Palla, while he was 39 and married. The tabloid revelations, which included intimate details of their relationship, contrasted sharply with his sterile public persona. Reflecting later, Davis noted, “I wasn’t a politician, I was a snooker player… I didn’t lose much sleep over it in the end really.” This episode, however, contributed to the eventual unraveling of his marriage. He had wed former Concorde flight attendant Judy Greig in 1990, and they shared two sons, but the couple separated in 2005 after a decade following the affair. Davis candidly attributed part of the breakdown to the selfish, all-consuming focus required by top-level sport, stating, “Perhaps I was giving the table a bit too much attention. I was difficult to live with. But so are all sports people – horrible. We’re all ‘Me, me, me.'” He later found lasting companionship with Jeannie Nash, embracing a new chapter in his personal life.

That new chapter extended remarkably into a vibrant creative realm. After retiring from professional snooker, Davis embarked on an unlikely and passionate journey into music, thoroughly dismantling the “boring” stereotype. He co-founded the electro group The Utopia Strong, producing four albums, and carved out a niche as a dedicated techno DJ. His musical pursuits have led to extraordinary moments, including performing DJ sets at the Glastonbury Festival and even supporting the band Blur at Wembley Stadium. He expressed astonishment at this reversal of his life’s trajectory: “I started off as a snooker player practising for eight hours a day in a dark room, and I ended up at Glastonbury DJing. You just don’t know what is going to happen.” This artistic passion highlights a man driven by deep curiosity, not just trophies.

The financial rewards of his snooker dominance provided the foundation for this explorative life. Davis amassed an estimated net worth of around £26.5 million, a fortune built from over £5.6 million in prize money and, crucially, lucrative endorsement deals orchestrated by his manager Barry Hearn. In the late 1980s, these deals made him Britain’s top-earning sportsperson. This wealth afforded him the freedom to pursue his eclectic interests without constraint, transitioning from the pressure of competition to the pleasure of artistic expression and personal fulfillment.

Ultimately, the story of Steve Davis is one of a multifaceted individual whose public persona was a narrow snapshot of a much richer existence. The discipline and focus required to become a sporting icon necessarily projected a certain image, but beneath that lay the complexities of human relationships, personal missteps, and redemption. His life illustrates that the dedication needed to master one craft can coexist with a restless spirit eager to master others. From the intense solitude of the snooker practice room to the communal pulse of a festival dance tent, his journey defies simple categorization.

Today, as a respected pundit, Davis bridges the old and the new, embodying both the storied history of snooker and its evolving present. His insights are informed by unparalleled experience, yet his perspective is undoubtedly widened by the adventures he has undertaken since his playing days ended. He stands not as “Mr. Boring,” but as a testament to the unexpected turns a life can take—a champion who found new arenas for his passion, a public figure who navigated private storms, and a man who proved that a legacy, much like a life, is never just one thing.
