Qatari artist designs Pierre Gasly’s helmet for Canadian Grand Prix

In the high-speed, technically precise world of Formula 1, where engineering and athleticism reign supreme, one does not typically expect to find a thoughtful cross-cultural art project. Yet, that is precisely what unfolded when Qatari artist Ghada Al Suwaidi was invited to create a custom helmet for Alpine driver Pierre Gasly ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. This unique collaboration, part of the 2026 Years of Culture programme linking Qatar, Canada, and Mexico, resulted in a portable masterpiece that raced at over 300 kilometers per hour. Al Suwaidi’s design elegantly wove together iconic symbols from both nations: the Canadian maple leaf and moose with Qatar’s elegant national animal, the oryx. As she explained, the project was about connection, about “bridging between two cultures that are so different but you still can find similarities between them.” It transformed a vital piece of safety equipment into a canvas for dialogue, seen by millions worldwide.

For Al Suwaidi, whose portfolio includes expansive murals and digital illustrations, this commission presented a thrilling and novel challenge. An F1 helmet is a vastly different canvas—curved, compact, and covered in mandatory sponsor logos. Every element of the design had to be meticulously planned to work within these strict physical and commercial constraints while still creating a visually striking image that would be legible in the blur of a speeding car. “It’s actually very tricky, because it’s my first time designing a helmet,” she admitted, noting the extensive research she undertook to understand how graphics interact with the helmet’s complex form. This was not art for a stationary observer in a quiet gallery; it was art designed for velocity, meant to make an instant impact from the grandstands and through television broadcasts.

The creative process for this project was notably collaborative in spirit, yet respectfully hands-off in execution. Pierre Gasly, the French driver who would wear the helmet, made a conscious decision to grant Al Suwaidi full artistic freedom. “I don’t want to have any input. I really want to let the artist work its magic,” he stated. His trust paid off. When he saw the final design, he immediately connected with its fusion of cultural symbolism and personal resonance. He noted the distinctly Canadian maple leaf, but was particularly drawn to the merged imagery of the oryx and moose horn on the helmet’s side. This element, to him, projected an “aggressive look,” which he felt perfectly matched his own driving style. The helmet thus became more than a borrowed artwork; it became a personalized emblem he was proud to wear.

This initiative brilliantly connected disparate worlds: a Qatari artist, a French driver, and a Canadian race venue. Gasly reflected on the profound power of such intersections, highlighting how the global platform of Formula 1 can amplify voices from the arts in an unprecedented way. “I find it amazing to give the opportunity to some artists that may not have a global exposure to actually express themselves through sport,” he said. Indeed, F1 has increasingly embraced these special one-off helmet designs, turning each race weekend into a potential showcase for artistic and charitable statements. This project elevated that tradition, using the sport’s immense reach not for commercial promotion alone, but for genuine cultural exchange and the celebration of an artist’s unique vision.

At its heart, the collaboration underscored a powerful, universal truth: art is a boundless form of communication. Al Suwaidi eloquently captured this sentiment, observing, “I think art is a universal language. You don’t need any translation to understand it.” Her design, traversing the Montreal circuit on Gasly’s helmet, spoke directly to a global audience of racing fans, many of whom might never set foot in an art gallery. It invited countless personal interpretations, proving that artistic expression can thrive and find meaning in the most unexpected contexts. The roaring engines of the racetrack became the backdrop for a silent but potent conversation about heritage, identity, and shared aesthetics.

Ultimately, when Pierre Gasly sped down the straights and navigated the chicanes of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, he carried more than just his own ambitions. He carried a piece of collaborative storytelling—a visual narrative of two cultures converging through symbolic artistry. For Ghada Al Suwaidi, her work was displayed not on a static wall, but in a dynamic, international arena, reaching an audience of millions in a single afternoon. The project demonstrated that the fields of sport and art are not separate realms; they are vibrant, complementary spaces where creativity can flourish, traditions can be honored, and new connections can be forged at breathtaking speed.
