The thrill of nocturnal alpine trail running: A unique winter sports experience
The air crackled with anticipation. Hundreds of runners, myself included, pulsed with excitement under a star-studded, sub-zero sky. This wasn’t a rave, but the start line of the inaugural Trails des Gets Hiver, a 10k winter trail run snaking through the snow-dusted peaks and forests of the French Alps. Les Gets, an hour from Geneva, transformed from a quaint ski village into a vibrant hub of energetic athletes, their headlamps painting the night an electric white. Clad in a motley assortment of winter running gear, we eagerly awaited the countdown. Trois, deux, un! Five hundred beams of light pierced the darkness, a constellation of bobbing hats and reflective strips embarking on a unique alpine adventure.
Ascending a familiar ski slope under the cloak of night felt surreal. The usual daytime bustle of skiers replaced by the rhythmic crunch of our ice grips on the hard-packed snow. The shared ascent fostered a sense of camaraderie, even among the elite runners who initially held back, hesitant to venture alone into the inky blackness of the surrounding mountains. As the path narrowed, the pace quickened, and the front-runners surged ahead, their lights guiding the way. The terrain varied, from wide, snow-covered roads winding through fragrant pine forests to steep, challenging inclines that tested our endurance. Despite the physical exertion, the otherworldly beauty of the illuminated snow and the silent majesty of the mountains created an unforgettable experience.
The challenge of the climb was punctuated by moments of levity. Jokes about hitching a ride on a passing piste-basher, the only other sign of life on the desolate slopes, kept spirits high. Memories of our chalet host’s tales of local wolf sightings added a frisson of excitement, though the groomer remained the only “beast” we encountered. Reflective markers and encouraging shouts from the marshals spurred us onward, their “Allez, allez, bravo!” a welcome soundtrack to our efforts. At the 7k mark, the 20k race leader flew past, a fleeting reminder of the greater challenges some runners embraced. Then came the ultimate test: a steep, knee-deep climb that drained our remaining energy reserves but ultimately led to the rewarding return to the groomed piste and the descent back to town.
Crossing the finish line, arms raised in triumph, a shared sense of accomplishment filled the air. We had not only conquered the challenging course but had also pushed our boundaries, experiencing the exhilaration of running in the dark, snowy mountains. The wooden medals and goodie bags felt like symbols of our shared adventure. The post-race celebration, held in Les Gets’ function hall, perfectly captured the spirit of the event. The effortless French organization, the delicious tartiflette dinner, and the convivial atmosphere fostered a sense of community among runners and their support crews. The shared meal, complete with salad, beer, and cake, was a fitting reward for our efforts.
The following morning, the sun bathed the landscape in a warm glow, inviting us on a restorative walk through the winter wonderland. From the Mont Chéry télécabine, we embarked on a scenic trek to Mont Caly and back, enjoying breathtaking views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding valley. The pristine snow-covered paths and the crisp mountain air offered a tranquil contrast to the previous night’s energetic race. The afternoon brought further relaxation at Les Sources du Chéry, Les Gets’ municipal spa. Soaking in the hot tub, we reflected on the unique appeal of the Trail des Gets Hiver.
The run offered the perfect balance of challenge and accessibility for experienced yet amateur runners like ourselves. While we had completed longer races in the past, this 10k, with its 400m elevation gain, proved just as demanding and rewarding. The novelty of running in snow, on a mountain, in darkness, added an element of adventure, pushing us beyond our usual comfort zones. The event, while requiring no specific training, provided a unique and exhilarating experience, a testament to the allure of the French Alps and the magic of nocturnal trail running. The Trail des Gets Hiver wasn’t just a race; it was an unforgettable immersion into the beauty and challenge of the alpine winter landscape.
