The world of football is in mourning following the tragic and untimely passing of Georgian striker Jaba Dvali at the age of 41. The former forward, whose name is etched into the history of European competition, reportedly died of a heart attack. While details surrounding his death remain scarce, the sudden loss has sent waves of grief through the clubs and communities he touched during his career. Dvali’s legacy, however, is forever secured by a remarkable and unique achievement: on a July night in 2009, he became the very first player to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League.

That historic moment came during his time with FC Zestafoni, in a qualifying round match against Northern Ireland’s Lisburn Distillery FC. Dvali’s three goals propelled his team to a 6-0 victory in the second leg, cementing an overwhelming 11-1 aggregate win—a record margin at the time. In the aftermath of the game, a modest and “happy” Dvali reflected on the team’s simple desire to win and score even more than they had in the first encounter. Little did he know then that his personal triumph would claim a permanent place in the annals of the newly rebranded tournament, which had just replaced the UEFA Cup that same year. His feat was a bright early chapter in the story of a competition that would soon crown its first champion, Atlético Madrid, the following season.

Beyond that singular European night, Jaba Dvali was a respected and dedicated figure in Georgian football. A member of the domestic league’s “100 club,” he enjoyed a long and varied career, representing several clubs in his homeland, including the prestigious Dinamo Tbilisi. It was with Dinamo that some fans, particularly those of Tottenham Hotspur, may remember him from a 2013 Europa League encounter. His journey also included a stint abroad with Azerbaijani champions Qarabag in 2014. Ultimately, his playing career came full circle, concluding in 2022 back at his beloved Zestaponi, by then competing in the fourth tier, demonstrating a loyalty that transcended the glitz of top-flight football.

His commitment to the game extended far beyond the pitch. Upon retiring, Dvali seamlessly transitioned into a leadership role, taking up the position of director general at Zestaponi. He also dedicated his time and knowledge to nurturing the next generation, contributing as a youth coach. This multifaceted involvement painted a picture of a man who was not defined solely by his historic goal-scoring exploit, but by a deep, all-encompassing love for football and his club. He remained a pillar of the football community, actively shaping its future even after his boots were hung up.

The news of his passing has been met with an outpouring of sorrow and tribute. Dinamo Tbilisi expressed its “deep sorrow,” extending condolences to his family and loved ones. FC Zestafoni, the club forever linked to his legendary achievement, honored their former star with a simple, poignant message alongside a highlight video: “Rest in Peace!”. These tributes underscore the respect and affection he garnered throughout Georgian football, a respect built on a lifetime of dedication rather than fleeting fame.

Jaba Dvali’s story is one of poignant contrasts—a player who captured a permanent, shining spot in European football history, yet whose international career was brief, earning just a single cap for Georgia. He experienced the peak of continental competition but also remained devoted to his roots in the lower leagues. His life, though cut devastatingly short, was a full and footballing one, from that record-breaking hat-trick to his quiet work behind the scenes. He leaves behind a legacy not just as a footnote in a record book, but as a cherished figure—a historic pioneer, a loyal clubman, and a mentor gone too soon.
