Two charged with murder after boy, 12, dies in collision with vehicle

The tranquil suburban community of Pilgrims Hatch in Brentwood was shattered on a Sunday evening, when a collision on Ashwells Road claimed the life of twelve-year-old Bobby Bloomfield. Just before 5:40 PM on June 8th, 2026, emergency services rushed to the scene where Bobby had sustained catastrophic injuries. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the young boy was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. The incident sent immediate shockwaves through the neighborhood, transforming a quiet residential street into the epicenter of a profound tragedy and a complex police investigation, as the community grappled with the unthinkable loss of a child.

In a development that has compounded the horror of the event, Essex Police have brought murder charges against two individuals in connection with Bobby’s death. William Lunnon, a 43-year-old man residing on Ashwells Road itself, and a 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named due to legal protections for minors, have both been charged with murder. Both have been remanded in custody and were scheduled to appear before the court. The decision to pursue a murder charge, rather than a lesser offense related to the collision, indicates that prosecutors believe there is evidence to suggest an intent to cause grievous bodily harm, marking this as far more than a tragic accident.

The investigation took a further serious turn with the arrest of four additional individuals from the Pilgrims Hatch area. Two men, aged 65 and 54, and two women, aged 65 and 45, were detained on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. They remain in police custody as inquiries continue. This aspect of the case suggests detectives are investigating whether attempts were made to conceal evidence, mislead officers, or otherwise interfere with the investigation following the fatal incident, adding layers of complexity to an already devastating situation.

Leading the inquiry, Detective Chief Inspector Greg Wood acknowledged the challenging nature of the case while affirming the progress made. “This remains a complex investigation, and we have made significant progress, including bringing charges and making further arrests,” he stated. His words underscored a dual focus: the meticulous piecing together of forensic and witness evidence to establish the precise chronology of events, and the provision of support for a grieving family. “Our focus remains on establishing the full circumstances and supporting Bobby’s family, who have suffered an unimaginable loss,” DCI Wood added, making a further appeal for public assistance in the pursuit of justice.

Beyond the police cordons and the stark legal proceedings, the human cost of this tragedy is immeasurable. Bobby Bloomfield was a pupil at Shenfield High School, where the news of his death descended like a pall. The school community, comprising his friends, teachers, and classmates, was plunged into mourning. A spokesperson for the school expressed profound sorrow, stating, “We are extremely saddened to learn about the death of one of our pupils. This has come as a shock to us all, and we send our deepest condolences to the pupil’s family.” The school has mobilized its support systems to counsel and comfort students and staff, even as they respect the ongoing police investigation by limiting further public comment.

As the judicial process begins its slow march, the community of Brentwood is left to mourn a young life ended with terrible suddenness. The street where Bobby died is now a place of solemn reflection, marked by flowers and tributes. Each new development in the case is followed with heavy hearts by residents trying to comprehend how such violence could touch their community. The path forward for Bobby’s family is one of incalculable grief, while for the wider public, this incident serves as a chilling reminder of fragility. The pursuit of answers continues, not only to meet the demands of the law but to provide some semblance of closure for a family and a town forever altered by the loss of a twelve-year-old boy.
