Inspired by the Masters? Here are Europe’s best new golf courses to travel to

Every April, a familiar ritual unfolds for millions of us. As the Masters Tournament graces our screens, painting dreamlike scenes of Augusta National’s flawless fairways and vibrant azaleas, we find ourselves pulled toward the closet. There, our own golf clubs gather dust, yet they suddenly symbolize so much more: the promise of fresh air, the challenge of a well-struck shot, and the simple joy of a walk in a beautiful place. We watch icons like Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry navigate the game’s highest pressure, and while our own skills may never earn a Green Jacket, that shouldn’t matter. The true spirit of the game isn’t confined to major championships; it’s found in the act of playing itself. Fortunately, for those of us in Europe, the opportunity to answer that springtime call is immense. We are blessed with a staggering array of world-class golf destinations, so many that it would take several lifetimes to experience them all. To help navigate this wonderful abundance, here is a look at some of the continent’s most exciting new golf courses, destinations that promise to make any golfer’s travel dreams a reality in 2026 and 2027.

Our journey begins in the spiritual home of the game, Scotland, where the highly anticipated Old Petty course at Cabot Highlands is set to open in May 2026. Set along the windswept shores of the Moray Firth, this course is designed to be a pure celebration of its rugged coastal environment. Early reports suggest a classic links-style layout where the natural contours of the land and dramatic sea views are integral to the experience. This isn’t a course imposed upon the landscape, but one woven into it, promising a round where the wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands is your constant companion. It strengthens Scotland’s undeniable claim as the ultimate bucket-list destination for any golfer seeking a authentic, breathtaking challenge.

From Scotland, we turn to France, where a legendary venue is being reborn. The Albatros course at Le Golf National, the fiery stage for Europe’s unforgettable 2018 Ryder Cup victory, is undergoing a major redesign, slated for a September 2026 reopening. This project is uniquely exciting because it offers golfers the chance to play a modernized version of a course they’ve witnessed test the world’s best under intense scrutiny. The redesign aims to enhance both playability for everyday golfers and the spectator experience, ensuring its legacy continues. To walk these same fairways, now refined for a new era, is to connect directly with a pivotal chapter in European golf history.

Portugal continues to solidify its status as a premier golf haven with two remarkable additions. First, the Torre Course at Terras da Comporta, an hour south of Lisbon, has already captured global attention by winning the title of the World’s Best New Golf Course for 2025. Designed by 2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia in his first signature design project, the course reflects a player’s nuanced understanding. Garcia aimed to create a layout that is challenging yet endlessly engaging, a course that “draws you back in” to try new strategies. It shares the stunning Terras da Comporta complex with the acclaimed Dunas Course, making this a must-visit coastal retreat. Meanwhile, on the island of Madeira, the Ponta do Pargo Golf Course is set to open in 2027, marking the island’s first new course in over twenty years. Carved into the dramatic western coastline by Nick Faldo’s design team, it promises cliff-top vistas over the Atlantic, offering a thrilling and scenic challenge that will put Madeira firmly on the map alongside the Algarve.

Returning to Scotland, another monumental project has already made its mark. The New Course at Trump International in Aberdeenshire was named Europe’s Best New Golf Course for 2025. Officially opened in July 2024, it is a vast, ambitious layout that sprawls across miles of dramatic coastal terrain. It boasts panoramic views of the North Sea and features audacious design elements, including what is claimed to be the world’s largest natural bunker. This course is built for grandeur, offering a bold and unforgettable golf experience that leverages the raw, powerful beauty of Scotland’s northeast coast.

Finally, a new links gem is emerging on the southeast coast of Ireland. Curracloe Links in County Wexford, expected to open in April 2027, is set to bring a championship-level links experience to a region famed more for its serene beaches than its golf. Designed by the renowned American team of Dana Fry and Jason Straka, it promises to be “unlike any existing Irish links,” according to experts. As the centerpiece of the €20 million Ravenport Resort, it will offer a fresh and distinctive take on the classic Irish links formula, complete with the expected windswept dunes and strategic complexity, inviting golfers to discover a beautiful and unspoiled corner of Ireland’s golfing landscape.

So, as the Masters fades from our screens and that familiar yearning to play takes hold, remember that the dream is far more accessible than it seems. Across Europe, from the highlands of Scotland to the cliffs of Madeira, a new generation of stunning courses is waiting. These destinations remind us that golf, at its heart, is not solely about perfect scores. It is about the adventure of the journey, the camaraderie of the round, and the profound pleasure of playing the game amidst some of the most beautiful landscapes our continent has to offer. All that’s left to do is dust off those clubs and book your tee time.
