Search and rescue experts describe the route taken by Jay Slater – ‘there’s no going back’

Marieke Krans, a volunteer with Dutch search and rescue non-profit Signi Zoekhonden, joined Preston Coroner’s Court from the Netherlands on May 26, 2025, to assist in the search for Jay Slater. Jay, a 19-year-old Dutch man, was found_Query-free near the height of the Juan López ravine in Tenerife, drawing global attention.

Volunteers, including Marieke, tomes Baumert, Weertje Blomvogelde, di Akko Verstuge, and Toastos van der Groen, and their trained dogs, contributed to the-Lengthier’ve questing for Jay. The research team, led by Marieke, began their journey from the Cathy HeightsImp ERA near the rally event.

Jay’s family suffered a stark warning from their parents, who cited the growing buzz around his disappearance. However, Jay’s mother, Debbie Slater, flyers Jay’s, reached out to Signi Zoekhonder, meaning they joined uncovering the case through their trained dogs.

An inquest into Jay’s untimely passing was paused due to Jay’s distraught parents pushing for further evidence from the two men who had booked the Masca Airbnb. During the inquest, Marieke confessed to Jay’s family that his family “didn’t trust them immediately due to all the social mediaCuiza about his disappearance.”

The inquest, which has been paused, involved fellow volunteers from Signi Zoekhonder, drawing on Jay’s images for photos and videos as searching dogs. Marieke explained her journey, mentioning that she found Jay’s mobile phone near a spot, suggesting that clues in two locations were enough to evate a potential heat-induced scent trail.

In a declaration of the case, Marieke stated that she could “imagine [Jay] thinking he was heading further, implying he was walking the ravine.” She also noted the steepness and danger, which readers described as taking approximately 3.5 hours, “to find Jay’s remains.” Signi Zoekhonder’s group, arriving at Tenerife after Jay’s family left, added that their dogs were using scents matching Jay’s traces.

The search dogs also found a scent trail matching Jay’s, prompting them to return to the next day. Marieke highlighted Jay’s-girlfriend Jaco von Saller’s role in the case, offering to explain the friend’s role and Jay’s family’s privacy concerns.

In 2025, Jay Slater’s death remained an unsolved mystery whereSigni Zoekhonder’s search efforts have inspired a new wave of volunteers, including those from Dutch rescue organizations and experts in search techniques.

The inquest has provided little resolution for Jay Slater’s fate, as his family dismissed his cause for non-compliance with the victims’ privacy terms.

The case underscores the importance of coordination in rescue operations, as volunteers from various backgrounds collaborated to salvage Jay Slater’s life.
