San Francisco Bay Area: A travel guide to the 2026 World Cup host

The San Francisco Bay Area is in the midst of an unprecedented golden age for major sporting events. In a whirlwind 16-month span, the region has played host to the NBA All-Star Game, the NFL’s Super Bowl, and is now preparing to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This remarkable trifecta cements Northern California’s status as a premier global destination for spectators and athletes alike. Even more historic is the role of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, which will achieve a unique distinction: never before has the same venue hosted both the Super Bowl and the World Cup within the same calendar year. Rebranded as San Francisco Bay Area Stadium for the tournament, this versatile arena is poised to be a central hub of the footballing celebration.

Levi’s Stadium will host a thrilling slate of matches, bringing global football fervor to the heart of Silicon Valley. Its schedule includes five pivotal group-stage fixtures, featuring nations from Qatar and Switzerland to Algeria and Australia, and will culminate in a tense Round of 32 knockout match on July 1st. This event, however, is about far more than the action inside a single stadium. It taps into the Bay Area’s deep and diverse sporting culture, which passionately supports franchises like the NFL’s 49ers, MLB’s Giants, the NBA’s champion Golden State Warriors, and the NHL’s Sharks. Football itself has profound roots here, nurtured by MLS’s San Jose Earthquakes and the region’s vast, multicultural communities whose international passions make the Bay Area a natural and enthusiastic host for the World Cup.

Beyond the stadiums, the Bay Area offers a breathtaking backdrop for visiting fans. The region encourages exploration, from the majestic coastal redwoods of Muir Woods and the dramatic Pacific vistas along Highway 1 to the famed vineyards of Napa and Sonoma valleys. Visitors can immerse themselves in history with a tour of the iconic Alcatraz Island or simply soak in the vibrant urban energy of San Francisco’s neighborhoods. This fusion of natural beauty, history, and cosmopolitan flair ensures that the World Cup experience extends far beyond the final whistle, offering lasting memories for every visitor.

A celebration of this scale is naturally accompanied by a world-class culinary scene. The Bay Area’s food landscape is a destination in itself, ready to satisfy every craving. Fans can savor authentic Neapolitan pizza at Tony’s in North Beach, legendary Mission-style burritos, or fresh seafood at classics like Sam’s Chowder House. A trip to Napa wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Mustards Grill, while Oakland’s iconic Fentons Creamery offers a perfect, old-fashioned sweet retreat. This incredible diversity of flavors mirrors the international tapestry of the tournament itself, ensuring that fans from every corner of the globe can find a taste of home or an exciting new culinary adventure.

Understanding that not every fan will have a ticket to Levi’s, the Bay Area Host Committee has designed an inclusive regional festival of football. A network of free public fan zones will spring to life across the region from June 11th, transforming the area into one giant celebration. Fans can gather under the sun at Thrive City outside the Chase Center, enjoy the lively atmosphere at Mission Rock near the Giants’ ballpark, or watch matches with the iconic backdrop of PIER 39. The celebration extends to the East Bay at Raimondi Park with the Oakland Ballers, and even down to the classic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. As Zaileen Janmohamed, President of the Host Committee, emphasizes, this “regional approach reflects our commitment to inclusivity,” ensuring every community has a chance to be part of this historic moment.

To ensure the focus remains on celebration rather than congestion, organizers are strongly encouraging the use of the Bay Area’s robust public transportation network. Navigating traffic and parking around Levi’s Stadium on event days is famously challenging. Fans are advised to plan their journeys meticulously, utilizing the VTA light rail and buses, the ACE and Capitol Corridor trains connecting to Caltrain, and other transit options for a smoother, more sustainable arrival. By planning ahead for logistics, visitors can dedicate their energy to what truly matters: the unity, passion, and unforgettable spectacle of the world’s game uniting in one of America’s most dynamic and picturesque regions.
